Three US soldiers killed in Afghanistan attack; Taliban claims responsibility

Three US Special Forces soldiers were killed and one wounded on Saturday (10 June) when an Afghan soldier opened fired on them during a joint operation in Achin in eastern Afghanistan, the Pentagon has said.

Attahullah Khogyani, a spokesman for the governor in Nangarhar province, said earlier Saturday that two USA soldiers had been killed and two others wounded in the attack. The shooter was killed by other soldiers.

The Achin district, where the attack is believed to have occurred, is described as an ISIS and Taliban stronghold.

The so-called green-on-blue attacks - when Afghan soldiers or police attack global troops - have been a major problem during Nato's long years fighting alongside Afghan forces.

A statement from the USA military said merely that the military was "aware of an incident in eastern Afghanistan".

Insider attacks have always been a hallmark of the USA experience in Afghanistan. ON my way here I was informed that U.S. service members were killed and wounded in an attack in Afghanistan.

Trump says he would be willing to testify under oath
The Senate intelligence committee will hear testimony from the former FBI Director James Comey the following day. King also pressed Coats to justify his decision not to answer the Senators' questions.

The Pentagon said the families of the three dead soldiers were being informed. "An investigation has already begun", Khogyani said, according to Reuters. The wounded soldier had been evacuated for medical treatment, it said.

In March, one of the soldiers of the Afghani army was killed after he opened fire on foreign forces at a base in Helmand province, three United States soldiers were wounded.

The district is also where the U.S. dropped one of its most powerful bombs earlier this month, killing close to 100 ISIS fighters, according to Afghan officials.

The Afghan conflict is the longest in American history, with US-led North Atlantic Treaty Organisation troops at war there since 2001, after the ousting of the Taliban regime. The killings have bred fierce mistrust between local and foreign forces even as the rate of such incidents has dropped in recent years. The US counterterrorism mission is separate from the NATO-led effort to train, advise and assist the Afghan army and police force in its fight against the Taliban.

The latest killings come at a time of intensified violence and when the U.S. is considering sending more troops to Afghanistan.
