A British election campaign unlike any other

Lib Dems want you to vote tactically to keep out the Tories

The Brexit talks were set to start on June 19 with UK Brexit secretary David Davis' meeting European Union's chief negotiator Michel Barnier.

Many believe the results of 2017 general elections will also impact Britain's exit from the 27-nation bloc as the main reason behind calling for sudden elections was to strength May hands in the Parliament so as to negotiate with Brussels and pass necessary legislation.

May's Conservatives won 318 seats in the election, falling short of the 326 required for an absolute majority.

It was three years before the next scheduled election, and the conservatives already had a secure, if small, majority.

Back then, it seemed like a safe bet, with her Conservative Party riding 20-points ahead of Jeremy Corbyn's left-wing Labour opposition in opinion polls.

"We are ready to do everything we can to put our programme into operation; there isn't a parliamentary majority for anybody at the present time, the party that has lost in this election is the Conservative Party, the arguments the Conservative Party put forward in this election have lost".

"Even if the result is anywhere near this, it's a catastrophic error", John McDonnell, the Labour shadow chancellor, said on the BBC of the decision to call the election.

The DUP is staunchly pro-union and is defined by its support for Northern Ireland remaining part of the UK.

Labour has said it will not seek a coalition, instead seeking to govern as a minority government if possible.

Speaking as she was re-elected MP for Maidenhead, Mrs May said: "At this time, more than anything else, this country needs a period of stability".

"We can confirm that the Democratic Unionist Party have agreed to the principles of an outline agreement to support the Conservative government", a spokesman for May said.

John McCain Claims Barack Obama Provided Better 'American Leadership' Than Donald Trump
This is a major departure for McCain, who lost to Obama in the 2008 presidential election and was a fierce critic of his former rival's foreign policy.

"It's had a lot to do with the Lib Dems not impacting much, with Theresa May's poor campaign, and Corbyn's ability to mobilise his base and offer something to nearly every voter in a Father Christmas manifesto", he said.

The question for the Conservative party will be whether the disgruntlement within its ranks spills over into an outright challenge to Mrs May, who won last year's Conservative leadership campaign by default after her only challenger, Andrea Leadsom, withdrew.

An initial statement suggested a deal had been struck with the Democratic Unionist Party (DUP), but a later version said the talks were continuing.

Much of their ire was directed at Mrs May's two close aides Fiona Hill and Nick Timothy - the latter who was blamed for the disastrous manifesto pledge to reform the funding of social care, dubbed the dementia tax, which is thought to have cost the party heavily at the ballot box.

"And I don't feel like the current prime minister or, indeed, the Tory party, has any idea about what to do with Brexit at the moment".

She said the two parties had enjoyed "a strong relationship" over many years.

But Scottish Conservative leader Ruth Davidson, who is gay, was among the first to express disquiet over a deal with the DUP, which is opposed to abortion and gay rights.

"Just to be clear, we will act in the national interest".

Brussels has insisted that freedom of movement is a requirement of access to the single market, and this will nearly certainly be opposed by the Conservatives due to their commitment to take back control of the United Kingdom borders and curb immigration.

However, they have now become very important in the current climate, where no one party has an overall majority. The Conservative leader ran a presidential campaign premised on her repeatedly recited "strong and stable" leadership, which would safely deliver a good Brexit deal to the UK.
