Malaysia Airlines flight turns back after bomb threat

A flight has been forced to turn back to Melbourne

Victoria Police said: "The man did not gain entry to the cockpit".

Passengers were kept on the plane for 90 minutes after landing as the aircraft was searched for potential bombs.

Malaysian Airlines flight MH128 is expected to land at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) today, following last night's incident at Melbourne's Tullamarine Airport.

"He was the one who first confronted him when an air hostess was getting scared of this guy and that's when the guy said "I'm going to blow up this plane", she said.

Ashton said clearance was granted for police to investigate the man after he was assessed to be fit for interview on psychological grounds.

Flights to Melbourne airport were being diverted, according to the 24-hour aviation monitoring website Flight Radar.

Operations have now resumed now the passenger is in custody.

The flight from Melbourne to Kuala Lumpur was turned back after the captain was alerted to the "disruptive" passenger by cabin crew.

A passenger on a Malaysia Airlines flight to Kuala Lumpur was arrested in Australia early on Thursday morning after attempting to get into the cockpit.

Armed security personnel entered the plane to remove the disruptive passenger and then escort the others out, he said.

Malaysian Airlines has suffered a number of high-profile incidents over he past three years, with the disappearance of MH370 in 2014 resulting in the presumed deaths of 239 people on board and prompting an worldwide search for the never-recovered plane.

But Malaysia's Deputy Transport Minister Abdul Aziz bin Kaprawi said "it was not a bomb but a powerbank", according to the AFP agency.

The man was tackled by passengers who overpowered him and tied him up with belts.

"The offender is potentially facing Commonwealth charges which carry a maximum 10 years in prison", he said, adding that the interrogation session with the offender concluded that there was no terrorism link. "Malaysia Airlines would like to stress that at no point was the aircraft 'hijacked'". "He was taken out of the plane handcuffed by Australian security officers".

Australian police said they checked that there was no bomb, and the incident is not being treated as terror related. Malaysia Airlines has released a full update on the incident on its official Twitter page.

Malaysia Airlines has suffered two major airline disasters in recent years.
