May strikes deal with DUP following shock result

The opposition Labor Party, led by Jeremy Corbyn, is set to get 261 seats, the Scottish National Party 35, the Liberal Democrats 12 and the Democratic Unionist Party 10 seats.

U.K. Prime Minister Theresa May is seeking to hold on to power after suffering a major blow in Thursday's election in which voters took away her Conservative Party's majority in Parliament.

"May fights to remain PM", said the front page of the Daily Telegraph, while the Times of London said: "May stares into the abyss".

But her decision to call the general election seems to have backfired, according to the exit poll, leaving the country in even more uncertainty, something financial markets don't react well to.

Current projections give the DUP 10 seats in the House of Commons and the Conservatives 319, enough to form a working majority.

"As a Brexiteer who believes in it with all his heart and soul, my fear is that Corbyn forms a coalition with the SNP and a few Lib Dems and we look down the barrels of a second referendum in a few years time", Farage said.

The prime minister has vowed to pull Britain out of Europe's single market in order to end mass migration from the bloc, despite fears of the economic impact.

Whilst the DUP allow the Tories to form a government that together could successfully push policies through, yesterday's election can only be seen as a significant loss and backward step for May, the Conservative's and United Kingdom as a whole.

"The DUP will always strive for the best deal for Northern Ireland and its people", she said.

KHALAF: Well, given the spectacular fiasco of the elections and the fact that Theresa May ran on a platform of a hard Brexit, I think one can assume that she no longer has a mandate for a hard Brexit.

The party's leader Arlene Foster has spoken out against a "hard Brexit", which could threaten this, and so will nearly certainly make this a red line.

Some Conservative lawmakers called for May's joint chiefs of staff, Fiona Hill and Nick Timothy, to be sacked for their key role in the election campaign.

Corbyn, who voted against European Union membership in 1975 but said he voted for membership in 2016, told voters the issue of Brexit had been settled. "I'm afraid we ran a pretty terrible campaign", she said. "The ease of movement of goods and services from the Republic of Ireland into the North is going to be of the utmost importance to the DUP, which would necessitate remaining part of the customs union". At that point, polls predicted she would massively increase the slim majority she had inherited from predecessor David Cameron.

The Protestant unionist party also had links with outlawed paramilitary groups during the years of Northern Ireland's "Troubles".

Labour gained 30 seats to win 262, with 40 percent of the vote compared to 42.4 percent for May.

But the leadership speculation confirms just how politically wounded the Prime Minister has suddenly become.

Conservative lawmaker Anna Soubry said she should "consider her position", while another, Heidi Allen, said she may not last six months.

BBC political reporter Laura Kuenssberg reported on Twitter that a source within the Conservative Party told her there was a "50/50" chance that May would resign.
