Box Office Report: 'Wonder Woman' Beats 'The Mummy'

Alex Kurtzman Chiabella James Universal

Its US$141.8 million worldwide launch made it the largest opening ever for a Cruise film, Boxofficemojo.com reports. Wonder Woman now stands alongside Star Wars: The Force Awakens (39 percent), Spider-Man (37 percent), Shrek 2 (33 percent), and Jungle Book (40 percent) as a modern second-weekend power.

Despite hard start in North America, Universal's The Mummy opened to an wonderful $52.2 million in China over the weekend, a career-high launch for Tom Cruise in the country. "And kudos to the cast, especially Tom Cruise", said Universal domestic distribution president Nick Carpou of "The Mummy". The remake, this time starring Cruise and Sofia Boutella ("Star Trek Beyond"), grossed only $32.2 million in its North American debut, according to studio estimates (final numbers are due Monday afternoon). Wonder Woman starring Gal Gadot passed the $200 million mark domestically after 10 days in release, and kept its hold on the #1 position with a $57 million second weekend take. The film collected Rs. 4.50 crores on the Saturday and Sunday respectively while leading the total first weekend of "The Mummy" to Rs. 12-12.5 crores.

With this report, it is easy to say that "Wonder Woman" is a major and biggest hit this summer.

'Wonder Woman' one of summer's most fun films
Movies & More reviewer John Gillispie shares his thoughts on " Wonder Woman ", which is rated PG-13 and now playing in theaters. She recruits the charming sidekick and love interest Steve Trevor ( Chris Pine ), along with the rest of her plucky friends.

The Mummy is one of the actor's worst performing films at the domestic box office in recent years, but it is killing at the global box office. That includes knocking of the newcomer Mummy on the list by almost $25 million, which is impressive, to say the least. Its domestic gross so far stands at $205 million, as it looks to fly past $300 million before the month is over. Outside of the US, the movie made $141. Director Bill Condon of "Beauty and the Beast" is set to helm "Bride of Frankenstein".

The latter is the next film scheduled in the Dark Universe, with Beauty and the Beast's Bill Condon attached to direct and a 2018 release date already lined up. Even The Scorpion King spin-off clocked up $36 million on launch weekend in 2002. With a budget of $125 million and likely tens of millions more spent on wide-ranging marketing campaign, "The Mummy" may not make enough to justify a sequel.

The Mummy is in theaters now. Rounding out the top five was "Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2", which nabbed an estimated $6.2 million domestically.
