'Wonder Woman' buries 'The Mummy' with $57.2M at weekend box office

Universal distribution executives trumpeted the film's worldwide performance while acknowledging the North American gross left something to be desired. "Wonder Woman" retained the top spot, collecting an impressive $57.2 million. This brings the DC Comics superhero movie to a total domestic take of $205 million in its first two weeks and a global total of $435 million, according to box office numbers in The Hollywood Reporter.

The film, directed by Alex Kurtzman, opened to a soft $32.2 million domestically over its opening weekend.

It shouldn't be too surprising that The Mummy didn't perform very well domestically, though.

The #8 movie is the new drama Megan Leavey, which made $3.7 million in its opening weekend. Universal is hoping that The Mummy, and in turn the Dark Universe, will see incredible success overseas and becoming another Fast of the Furious franchise. It cost $125 million to make the film and has taken in $141 million overseas.

"There are so many characters that intersect in so many ways that are exciting for us", he added. In the 2017 update, Cruise plays a freelance treasure hunter who resurrects a princess (Sofia Boutella). Anabelle Wallis, Jake Johnson and Courtney B. Vance also appear. 2014's "Dracula Untold", it turns out, is not canon. "Beauty and the Beast" director Bill Condon is set to helm "Bride of Frankenstein".

E3 2017: Shadow Of The Colossus Is Getting Remastered
The announcement was made during the publisher's E3 conference pre-show, where a trailer confirming the release date was played. The vast, open landscapes of Shadow of the Colossus have also returned, but they have received a significant facelift.

"The Dark Universe has to start somewhere", said Dergarabedian. "It's not about which one went first". The fifth entry in the Pirates franchise made $10.7 million during its third weekend, raising its domestic total to $135.8 million. The studio dropped the trailer for the crime-centric action biopic on Monday, presumably a strategic move to get audiences excited about its star.

Variety said "The Mummy" debut was on pace to make $32.2 million domestically and the studio hopes to recoup the low take in the United States in markets overseas.

Two newcomers took the first and the second places for the weekend box office. Marvel's newest blockbuster keeps chugging along and brought in $6.2 million to raise is Stateside haul to $366.3 million. The top 12 films this weekend grossed $138 million, down about 5% from the same frame past year.

"Alien: Covenant", $1.8 million ($1.6 million international).

The #4 film is Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales. It sold a modest $6 million in tickets in its debut.
