DC, Maryland Suing Trump Over Foreign Pay

NORTHAM: The lawsuit also contends Trump's businesses are drawing away customers from hotels, convention centers and the like in Maryland and D.C. White House Spokesman Sean Spicer batted away the lawsuit by two Democratic attorneys general as partisan politics.

The suit asks for a "declaratory judgement" that Trump has violated the emoluments clauses and that he will continue to do so until he divests entirely from his businesses.

Earlier this year, legal watchdog group Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington (Crew) filed a federal lawsuit in the in the southern district of NY alleging that Trump violated the constitution by failing to sufficiently extract himself from his expansive business empire, which has interests in more than two dozen countries.

Legal scholars who have addressed the emoluments clauses as they pertain to President Trump have mixed opinions.

"From day one, President Trump has been committed to complete transparency and compliance with the law", RNC spokeswoman Lindsay Jancek said in a statement. She says the lawsuit represents "the kind of partisan grandstanding voters across the country have come to despise". "The American people elected President Trump to lead this country, and it is time Democrats end their efforts to de-legitimize his presidency". The General Services Administration, the federal agency that oversees the three-year-old lease of the old Post Office building turned Trump hotel, has found that the Trump Organization is in "full compliance" with the lease.

"The Republican-controlled Congress has wholly failed.as serving as a check and balance on the president, and has thus far given the president a total pass on his business entanglements", Racine said.

A la izquierda, el fiscal general de Maryland, Brian Frosh, acompañado del procurador del Distrito de Columbia, Karl Racine, dan una conferencia de prensa en Washington el lunes 12 de junio de 2017. They said the suit involves so-called emolument clauses of the Constitution - little-known anti-corruption provisions meant to shield the president from outside influence. "Each President, regardless of temperament or ideology, has sought, in his own way, to honor that solemn vow [to defend the Constitution]", the lawsuit read.

6 dead in massive London high-rise fire; figure expected to rise
It was built in 1974 and is managed by the Kensington and Chelsea Tenant Management Organisation on behalf of the Council. By mid-day, London police said six people had been killed and they cautioned the death toll was likely to rise.

This new suit was brought by attorneys general who are both Democrats, Spicer noted. "You got no emoluments clause there, and it's absolutely clear that the framers of the Constitution intended that to protect us from presidential corruption".

A similar suit was filed in a NY federal court in January by Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington, or CREW, a public-interest group.

Racine and Frosh said Monday that Trump has broken promises to separate himself from his business interests, noting that he receives regular updates on his company's finances. "We can not treat a president's ongoing violations of the Constitution and disregard for the rights of the American people as the new and acceptable status quo".

But last month Trump's tax attorneys declared in a letter to the White House that the President's IRS filings over the previous decade showed that he was for the most part free of any Russian income or debt.

It's uncharted territory, legally speaking: The Supreme Court has never heard a case about the foreign emoluments clause.

Maryland Attorney General Brian Frosh (left) and District of Columbia Attorney General Karl Racine announce a lawsuit against President Trump over conflicts of interest with his businesses on Monday in Washington.
