In dismissive tweet, Trump seems to confirm obstruction probe

The Washington Post reported on Wednesday that Robert Mueller, the special counsel appointed to oversee the FBI investigation into Russian interference in the USA election, is investigating Mr Trump for possible obstruction of justice.

Trump's young presidency has been battered by allegations - under investigation both by Congress and the FBI - that Russian Federation interfered to sway the 2016 election in his favor, in possible collusion with Trump's campaign team.

The emergence of the obstruction of justice inquiry may make it harder for Trump to have Mueller removed. "Nice", Mr Trump wrote on Twitter, later repeating his accusation that the probe is a "witch hunt".

Mark Corallo, a spokesman for Trump's personal lawyer, said: 'The FBI leak of information regarding the President is outrageous, inexcusable and illegal'. And that's when, we're told, an investigation began into whether the president may have attempted to obstruct justice. Devlin Barrett is one of The Post reporters on the story and joins us now.

When Knoller pressed further, asking why the president can tweet about the ongoing investigation, but she can't comment on said tweets, Sanders responded, "Because I'm not the president".

Former FBI director James Comey, in his testimony last week, quite clearly was laying the factual predicate for a possible obstruction charge - detailing Trump's efforts to persuade Comey to drop the investigation of Michael T. Flynn, Trump's former national security adviser, and when that did not work, firing Comey with a false pretextual explanation.

"I think I better wait until I get done with my conversations with Feinstein before I answer that question", Grassley said when asked if the committee would look into obstruction.

On Twitter, Trump decries obstruction probe related to 'phony' Russia story
That committee is also reviewing Russian election meddling and any ties to the Trump campaign. " #MAGA ", Trump tweeted later Thursday morning.

The pair of tweets come one day after the Washington Post reported that Mueller's Russian Federation probe has been expanded to include potential crimes committed by the president.

SHAPIRO: You also report that investigators are looking into whether financial crimes might have been committed by Trump associates. Earlier this week, news reports indicated that Trump was thinking about firing Mueller but was dissuaded by staff.

Deputy Attorney General Rosenstein, who appointed Mueller on May 17, testified on Tuesday that he would not fire the special counsel without "good cause". The investigation has been cloaked in secrecy, and it is unclear how many others have been questioned by the FBI. Days after the Federal Bureau of Investigation chief was ousted, Trump told NBC News' Lester Holt that the Russian Federation probe played a role in his explosive decision to dismiss him.

President Trump addressed a joint session of Congress for the first time on February 28th, 2017.

Former prosecutor Ken Starr told CNN: "Comey said even though the word was hope, he took it as a directive, it became an interpretation". After a day of speculation, White House spokeswoman Sarah Huckabee Sanders said, "While the president has the right to, he has no intention to do so".

Recent reports have said Trump also requested help from Coats and Rogers to pressure Comey to end the investigation into Flynn's activities.
