Bill Cosby mistrial sparks outrage

Bill Cosby arrives at the Montgomery County Courthouse during his sexual assault trial Friday

Since Thursday morning, when the jurors told Montgomery County Court of Common Pleas Judge Steven O'Neill they were having trouble reaching agreement, they have spent almost 24 hours either discussing the case in a conference room or re-hearing trial testimony in the courtroom.

The 79-year-old Cosby is accused of drugging and molesting a Temple University employee in 2004 at his home near Philadelphia.

Announcing the decision, Pennsylvania judge Steven O'Neill reminded Mr Cosby that he remains charged and on bail, despite the mistrial.

The names of the jurors who failed to reach a verdict in Bill Cosby's sexual assault trial have not been made public, but the judge in the case could revisit the issue as early as Monday.

In a statement read aloud by one of Cosby's aides, his wife, Camille, who attended only a couple of hours of the trial, took aim at the prosecutors and the judge. Cosby pleaded not guilty to the charges.

Cosby, who gave the deposition as part of Constand's lawsuit against him, said he got seven prescriptions for the powerful sedative in the 1970s for the objective of giving them to women with whom he wanted to have sex.

On Friday, Bill Cosby thanked the jury for their honest work. The judge instructed them to keep working, but despite marathon 12-hour sessions, the jury said on Saturday it was at an impasse.

"As you can only imagine", Allison said, "I've got a lot to praise God for".

The prosecution spent five days painstakingly trying to build their case, calling Constand and her mother to the stand, as well as another woman who alleged that Cosby also drugged and assaulted her in Bel Air in 1996.

Mali official says at least 2 dead in attack
Initially concentrated in the desert north, attacks have increasingly struck the centre and south, around the capital Bamako . In March the same year, a grenade and gun attack on La Terrasse nightclub in Bamako killed five people, including foreigners.

Among the women who huddled with Constand was Victoria Valentino, who said Cosby assaulted her almost five decades ago.

Before the trial, Cosby told CNN's Michael Smerconish that he wants to return to comedy and activism.

"I was relieved when they said mistrial, because it means that it wasn't an acquittal", says Linda Kirkpatrick, who is not involved in the current case but is one of dozens of women who have accused the entertainer of sexual assault.

There is, of course, also the possibility that jurors might simply disagree at to the weight of the evidence in a largely "he said, she said" case with little forensic evidence (e.g., the composition of the pills), or exactly what the judge's legalistic instructions mean when applied to the facts of this case.

However, prosecutors said they would retry Cosby and he still faces a slew of civil lawsuits.

"You're not off the hook, buddy."

"Bill Cosby has already been exposed as a predator who hid behind his jovial mask for more than 50 years and no jury verdict will ever change that", she posted on Facebook.

The defense has said Cosby and Constand were lovers sharing a consensual moment of intimacy. She looked calm as some of the other women wept, and her lawyer, Dolores Troiani, spoke for her, saying they were looking forward to the retrial. Overtly and arrogantly collaborating with the District Attorney.

She said that she hoped prosecutors tried the case again and that the court permits more accusers as witnesses. She called the prosecutors heinously and exploitively ambitious. On Saturday, they came back and told O'Neill they were hopelessly deadlocked.
