Brooks Koepka wins US Open title after record week

One of golf's biggest hitters, the 27-year-old also demonstrated a killer instinct along with a deft touch with the putter, rolling in a monster 41-foot birdie putt at the eighth.

Brooks Koepka produced a back-nine birdie blitz to win the US Open here Sunday, becoming the seventh consecutive first-time victor of a major with a record-equalling four-shot victory at Erin Hills. Seven players reached 10 under or better this week - Koepka, Brian Harman, Justin Thomas, Tommy Fleetwood, Rickie Fowler, Charley Hoffman and Hideki Matsuyama. He matched Rory McIlroy's U.S. Open record by finishing at 16 under.

"That's awesome", Koepka said.

"It's going to be a really cool day for someone tomorrow", the world number nine said.

"It hasn't sunk in, obviously, yet, and probably won't for a few days", Koepka said after his closing 67. "I finished fourth in the US Open, I can't be too snotty about that". And then he made birdie on the next hole. He set up a short birdie putt with a nice chip on 18, and then waited around for the leaders to finish.

He followed with birdies at 15 and 16 to suddenly widen his gap to four shots and close in on the Open championship.

"I've never contended for a major before, so when you get to Saturday and Sunday you've got to see how you react and how you feel", said Fleetwood, who bounced back from three bogeys in six holes on the front nine to birdie the ninth and 14th.

Most notable was former Bulldog and Lilliputian lefthander Brian Harman.

At 13-under on the 13th hole, Koepka was in the lead but still under plenty of pressure. But back-to-back bogeys on 12 and 13 caused him to slip while Koepka was surging ahead.

And with Harman making back-to-back bogeys, the remainder of Koepka's round turned into a procession as he strolled to that four-shot victory.

'A Number of Casualties' After Incident in London, 1 Arrested: UK Police
London's transport authority said on Twitter that the Seven Sisters road had been closed due to an "emergency services incident". Manchester was also hit by a severe attack when a bomber killed more than 20 people at an Ariana Grande concert.

"Yeah, no doubt. I thought it was a fantastic round of golf, given what we were dealing with to start the day", the fifth-ranked player in the world said. "But you've got to tip your cap to him". "Yeah, it's definitely something I draw upon". "Hopefully they'll want me to be a part of the Walker Cup, but you've got to play good". "I know I'm going to be nervous, I just need to harness that as best I can".

No one was more solid from start to finish than Koepka.

Koepka settled for a tap-in par, but that didn't matter. "So I think that was kind of the changing point of the round for me". Harman spotted Koepka at least five inches, 35 pounds.

The flag commemorated the late Arnold Palmer's win at the 1960 U.S. Open at Cherry Hills.

"Today is more like a British Open but they were soft conditions", the Big Easy said.

Like Harman, Thomas couldn't match Koepka's final-round mastery, which came on Father's Day. Since Jason Day lifted the 2015 PGA Championship, every major championship has been won by a first-timer.

"What I've done this week is incredible", Koepka. "I didn't exactly get my dad a card, so this works". "I just kept grinding and played the back nine pretty well".

Koepka won his maiden Major in the early hours of this morning at the Erin Hills, which marked the seventh Major in a row that has been claimed by a first-time champion. Only four left-handers-Bubba Watson, Phil Mickelson, Mike Weir and Bob Charles-have won major championships.

Spieth said he liked the course a lot and hopes the U.S. Open comes back one day.
