Escaped inmates still on the run

Dubose and Donnie Russell Rowe escaped after killing two prison guards during a bus transport in Geo.

Two correctional officers were overpowered, shot and killed Tuesday morning by a pair of inmates who escaped in Putnam County, Georgia, according to sheriff's deputies. One of the two inmates then shot and killed both guards, Sills said.

The pair stole clothing from the house about 25 miles north of where they had escaped, and authorities found discarded prison clothing there on Tuesday.

The 2008 white Ford F-250 pickup, with Georgia license plate BCX5372, was stolen between Tuesday evening and Wednesday morning from a rural business.

Putnam County Sheriff's Office spokeswoman Teresa Slade says the getaway happened at about 7:23 a.m. Tuesday, southeast of Atlanta.

Sills said Dubose also has "ghost" tattooed on his right forefinger and "face" on his right pinky finger - signs of membership in the Ghost Face Gangsters.

In a Wednesday afternoon press conference, Sills said the truck was taken sometime between 6 p.m. Tuesday and 6 a.m. Wednesday when the business reopened.

The governor urged anyone in the surrounding areas to be cautious while the inmates remain at large, saying they are extremely risky. "They murdered two correctional officers", said Sills.

This combo of undated photos provided by the Georgia Department of Corrections shows inmates Ricky Dubose, left, and Donnie Russell Rowe.

Greg Dozier, Department of Corrections Commissioner, said the phone call about the deaths hit him hard: "My heart is still in the soles of my shoes". Officials said their families are "distraught". The inmates are accused of then carjacking a 2004 dark green Honda Civic (GA tag RBJ6601), and fleeing the scene.

Tributes to the slain corrections officers Curtis Billue, 58, and Christopher Monica, 42, are posted on the Officer Down Memorial Page. "They just murdered two corrections officers in a brutal fashion".

The note tells the men: "There is no one you can trust... and nowhere you can go that we won't find you".

The two inmates got a head start by taking and throwing away the Honda driver's mobile phone and leaving the other 31 prisoners locked inside the bus, Mr Sills said.

The names of the prison guards weren't immediately released.

Tracks and footprints led investigators to believe Rowe and Dubose took the truck, Sills said.

The two inmates were part of a group of 33 inmates being transported on a bus from Baldwin and Hancock state prisons to a diagnostic facility in Jackson, Myrick said.

The armed convicts are also believed to have gotten their hands on some cash.

Rowe, a repeat offender now serving life without parole, was imprisoned after being convicted on charges of armed robbery and aggravated assault.

According to prison records, Rowe was serving life without the possibility of parole for a 2001 armed robbery.

Dubose and Rowe, he said, might try to break into homes and steal clothing, so police were focusing on identifying those kinds of incidents. Dubose was sentenced to up to 20 years in prison for armed robbery, aggravated assault and theft in 2014.
