Finsbury Park mosque attack: Poignant message of solidarity left at Tube station

One dead 10 injured in London mosque incident police

AFP reporters saw a helicopter hovering overhead and several emergency vehicles blocking a section of Seven Sisters Road, a busy thoroughfare.

One person was killed and 10 people injured in the incident, which took place as people left the Muslim Welfare House on Seven Sisters Road in Finsbury Park, after midnight prayers during Ramadan.

Another said the attacker shouted about killing Muslims as he was held by local people.

UK Prime Minister Theresa May said police are treating the incident "as a potential terrorist attack".

"Eight people injured were taken to three separate hospitals; two people were treated at the scene for minor injuries".

Harun Khan, the head of the MCB, said the van had "intentionally" run over people leaving night prayers for the holy month of Ramadan.

"He has been taken to hospital as a precaution and will be taken into custody once discharged".

Police said the van driver would also be subject to a mental health assessment in due course.

"While this appears to be an attack on a particular community, like the awful attacks in Manchester, Westminster and London Bridge it is also an assault on all our shared values of tolerance, freedom and respect".

Since al-Masri's time it has come under new management and CNN correspondent Phil Black says over the past 10 years it has "worked very hard at becoming a healthy, active member of the community".

Counter-terrorism police have joined regular police officers looking into the incident, the Guardian newspaper reported. It said its prayers are with the victims.

UK govt scrambles to limit fallout from London blaze
He says it may be necessary for numerous outmoded tower blocks built in the 1970s to be demolished because of safety concerns. Some Grenfell residents had warned months ago that fire safety issues at the tower left it at risk of a "catastrophic" event.

"People were shouting this is an act of terrorism, even though he's white", another witness, Hillary Briffa, said, referring to the man taken away be police.

The nature of the attack drew immediate parallels with the London Bridge atrocity two weeks ago, in which eight innocent people were killed.

One video shows injured people lying on the ground and a man performing first aid on the injured.

The Finsbury Park mosque was associated with extremist ideology for several years after the 9/11 attacks in the United States but was shut down and reorganized.

Its former imam Abu Hamza was jailed for life in NY on terrorism charges in 2015.

They killed eight people before being shot dead by police.

London police have declared the crash a major incident and closed the area to normal traffic.

Mohammed Kozbar said the attack early Monday morning was no different than the recent attacks on London Bridge and Manchester Arena and said the Muslim community is "in shock".

On his Facebook page, Khan at the time called on Londoners "to pull together, and send a clear message around the world that our city will never be divided by these disgusting individuals who seek to harm us and destroy our way of life".

Five people were killed in the attack.
