Four people missing as tsunami hits Greenland after natural disaster

Debris scatters the shoreline of Nuugaatsiaq after tsunami waves struck the coast of Greenland on Saturday

A 4.1-magnitude natural disaster, which struck 28 kilometres north of the northwest village of Nuugaatsiaq, is believed to have triggered the tsunami, according to a report from Kalaallit Nunaata Radioa, the national broadcaster in Greenland.

The relatively-small magnitude 4 quake was still enough to trigger a surge of water which destroyed several homes.

"It's not normal, such a large quake in Greenland", she said. Some of the homes were swept into the ocean by the waves.

The BBC is reporting a total of 39 people have been evacuated from Nuugaatsiaq.

Some residents posted images to social media showing huge waves breaking over buildings in the town. During the video, the wave can be seen reaching some of the homes and moving all the objects around it. Emergency teams are now searching for the four people missing.

"Four people are missing", local broadcaster KNR quoted local police chief Bjorn Tegner Bay as telling a news conference in the autonomous Danish territory.

Nuugaatsiaq, which has a population of around 100 people, was one of the most affected areas.

The Danish officers will assist in operative command of the rescue efforts as well as relieve hard-pressed colleagues, said a spokesperson from the Danish National Police (Rigspolitiet).

Two people sustained serious injuries, and seven others less serious injuries, police said.

The Geological Survey of Denmark and Greenland said Sunday that an quake late Saturday with a magnitude of around 4.0 on the Richter scale struck northwestern Greenland near the village of Nuugaatsiaq.
