London fire: Government staff drafted to help victims

Tributes are left by Latymer Community Church, near to Grenfell Tower in west London after a fire engulfed the 24-storey building last week.

London's mayor said Sunday that the Grenfell Tower fire, in which 58 people are presumed dead, was caused by "mistakes and neglect", as he acknowledged growing public frustration and anger.

The new total may change as the investigation continues, Cundy said.

The new exterior cladding used in a renovation on London's Grenfell Tower may have been banned under United Kingdom building regulations, two British ministers said Sunday as police continued their investigation into the inferno that killed at least 58 people.

Releasing the first images from inside the burnt-out building, Commander Stuart Cundy said some of the victims may never be identified.

"Whilst I sincerely hope that our work over the coming days means that we (will be) able to say that less people are confirmed as having died, I also have to consider the sad reality that this may rise", Metropolitan Police Cmdr. But what I hope the new team and this package of support will start to get those affected by this tragedy the urgent assistance from the authorities they need.

The company said the construction methods used in relation to the cladding on Wing On Centre were different from those reportedly used for Grenfell Tower, and Wing On Centre is likely to have a much lower fire risk as a result.

It is feared many are trapped inside the blazing building as the fire broke out in the wee hours of Wednesday.

A representative of the families who met with May and spoke to reporters briefly after leaving 10th Downing Street said "we will be making this in the community, with the community".

London fire: 58 confirmed or presumed dead after Grenfell Tower disaster
It includes 30 deaths that already have been confirmed, and reports of people who are missing and presumed to have been killed. Earlier this week, May was confronted by protesters furious over her handling of the Grenfell Tower disaster.

"I have heard the concerns and I have ordered immediate action across the board to help victims' relatives and the survivors", she said.

Matthew Parris, a columnist and former Conservative lawmaker, said May's response to the fire had shown a lack of judgment which made her unsuitable to be prime minister. They would wear high-visibility clothing so they could easily be found, dispense advice and ensure the right support is provided, she added.

The gutted tower block after firefighters had successfully fought the blaze.

After a turbulent three months which has seen Britain hit by three deadly Islamist militant attacks and now the tower blaze, Queen Elizabeth said the mood was deeply sombre but that the British people were resolute in the face of adversity.

The fire at the 24-story building has led to community anger and protests over the British government's response. More than $3.8 million has been raised for the victims. Numerous displaced are living in churches and community centres.

Community groups have said warnings about poor fire safety have always been ignored, and that in the aftermath of the disaster, officials had failed to immediately take care of those affected.

Controversy is also erupting over the Grenfell Tower's exterior cladding, with two British ministers saying the cladding used in a recent renovation may have been banned under United Kingdom building regulations.

PC Cundy said the force was releasing the pictures to highlight "the scale of the challenge facing us as our teams search Grenfell Tower to recover those people still inside and return them to their loved ones".

Two Underground lines near the fire area were partially shut down on Saturday to make sure that debris did not land on the tracks.
