London mosque attacker: 'I want to kill all Muslims'

Numerous victims are believed to have just finished worshipping at the Finsbury Park mosque after breaking the Ramadan fast.

Some witnesses at the scene - near Finsbury Park Station and Arsenal's Emirates stadium - said more than one attacker may have been involved. The mosque was once a notorious hub for radical Islamists that has since become a centre for inter-faith outreach.

- Who is the suspect?

"The driver of the van - a man aged 48 - was found detained by members of the public at the scene", police report.

Witnesses said the man was white.

Police said the driver has been taken to hospital "as a precaution" and will undergo a mental health assessment.

A man who witnessed the entire scene, Abdulrahman Saleh Alamoudi, said that after the man was immobilized, he was still shouting: "I will kill all Muslims, I will kill all the Muslims".

Eight people were injured during the attack and taken to three area hospitals.

Eight people were killed and dozens more were injured in the attack, which began shortly before 10pm local time on 3 June. At least two are being treated for "very serious" injuries.

DAC Basu added: "The attack unfolded whilst a man was receiving first aid from the public at the scene".

A Metropolitan Police spokesperson said it is "too early to say" if the collision is a terror incident. One person was killed and 10 were hurt. Police said the Muslim Council of Britain said a van intentionally ran over worshippers.

Finsbury Park resident Cynthia Vanzella also told Sky News that she saw police giving emergency medical treatment to victims after the attack.

One dead as van rams pedestrians near London mosque
I tried to stop him (the suspect), some people were hitting him but I said stop him and keep him until the police came. The group's general secretary, Harun Khan , said that eyewitnesses saw the van driver hit a number of Muslims.

Police issued an initial statement at 01:03 am (0003 GMT) saying a vehicle had collided with pedestrians.

Police say no other suspects have been identified, but their investigation continues.

In one video, a group of men are seen holding the suspect to the ground as they call for the police.

The Metropolitan Police's counter-terrorism command is leading the investigation.

"Horrible to watch police officers doing cardiac massage at people on the floor, desperately trying to save them", witness Cynthia Vanzella wrote on Twitter.

- How did Muslim groups react? The Muslim Welfare House released a statement Monday saying that it was shocked and appalled by the event.

"Muslim communities have been calling for increased action to tackle the growth in hate crime for many years and transformative action must now be taken to tackle not only this incident but the hugely worrying growth in Islamophobia".

The incident comes just over two weeks after three militants drove into pedestrians on London Bridge and stabbed people at nearby restaurants and bars, killing eight people. "Communities will see additional officers patrolling across the city and at Muslim places of worship".

"Rampant Islamophobia has been on the rise for a number of years".

The incident was being treated as a potential terrorist attack said Prime Minister Theresa May, which if confirmed would make it the fourth since March in Britain and the third to involve a vehicle deliberately driven at pedestrians.

Earlier, she chaired an emergency meeting of Cabinet members, police and security personnel, the Downing Street press office tells CNN.
