London vehicle hits pedestrians, police say 'number' of injuries

Police say a vehicle struck pedestrians on the road in north London, leaving sever.

"There are a number of casualties being worked on at the scene", London police said, describing it as a major incident.

"Everybody was shouting: "A van's hit people, a van's hit people", one woman who lives opposite the scene told the BBC.

"At this early stage of the investigation no further suspects have been identified or reported to the police".

The incident happened outside the Muslim Welfare House, 100 metres (yards) around the corner from the Finsbury Park Mosque. "This is being treated as a terrorist attack and the Counter-Terrorism Command is investigating", said Neil Basu, senior national coordinator for terrorism.

"He is in bad shock, of course, he didn't see the man die but he did see the man grabbed by the local community".

The incident is being investigated by counter terrorism cops, who say they are now not looking for any other suspects. "Sadly, he has died".

She added: "Londoners have been hit with a series of attacks and have actually been nothing short of heroic".

London Mayor Sadiq Khan called the incident a "horrific terror attack".

The statement from her office said her thoughts were with the injured, their loved ones and emergency services who responded to the scene.

Finsbury Park mosque was once a notorious hub for radical Islamists but has entirely changed in recent years under new management.

According to eyewitnesses this was a deliberate attack against innocent Muslims going about their life.

Khan added that the attack appears to be on a specific community, like attacks in Manchester, Westminster, and London Bridge.

Kozbar complained that the "mainstream media" was unwilling to call the attack a terrorist incident for many hours.

UK officials treating mosque attack as terrorism
The incident comes at a time when emotions are high in the United Kingdom , in the wake of a series of deadly terrorist attacks. The incident comes weeks after a van hit pedestrians on London Bridge and knife-wielding attackers killed eight people nearby.

Police have not offered any details about the cause of the crash.

Cynthia Vanzella, a witness to the van attack, describes the area as a mixed community, with people from many different countries and cultures.

A 48-year-old man has been arrested and is in custody.

One man was trapped under the van and people tried to lift up the vehicle to free him. "No one! No one!"

"It is too early to state if his death was as a result of the attack". It is being treated by police as an act of terrorism. "He will also be subject of a mental health assessment in due course".

Among those known to have worshiped at the mosque during Abu-Hamza's time there are convicted shoe bomber Richard Reid and Zacarias Moussaoui, the so-called 20th hijacker of September 11.

Locals then pounced on the driver and pinned him down while waiting for the police to arrive.

BREAKING: We have been informed that a van has run over worshippers as they left #FinsburyPark Mosque.

- Islington's Seven Sisters Road, where the attack took place, is home to at least four mosques, and would have likely been filled with worshipers leaving late-night taraweeh prayers. Officers on patrol nearby were at the scene within seconds and made one arrest.

The force also dismissed reports that the van driver produced a knife, saying: "At this stage there are no reports of any persons having suffered any knife injuries".

Ratib Al-Sulaman told CNN he was sitting with friends two minutes away, when an "incident in front of the mosque" occurred.

In 2014, Finsbury Park Mosque became one of only three faith organizations - and the first Muslim organization - to achieve the VISIBLE standard. "My prayers are with the victims and their families", read the statement.

People had been attending mosques in the area as part of the Muslim holy month of Ramadan.

According to a tweet from Transport for London, Seven Sisters Road has been closed northbound at Hornsey Road and southbound at Rock Street.
