'Number of casualties' after vehicle strikes London pedestrians

Metropolitan Police said officers were called to the scene on Seven Sisters Road at 12:20 a.m. Monday.

The statement says: "One man was pronounced dead at the scene".

Shortly after midnight, the hired vehicle swerved into a group of people leaving prayers at the Finsbury Park Mosque, one of the biggest in the country, witnesses said.

"Police say incident has all the "hallmarks" of a terrorist" incident.

"While he was in the police van he was waving for victory, he was very happy".

Ratip Alsulaimen told the Press Association several people were injured.

"Horrible to watch police officers doing cardiac massage at people on the floor, desperately trying to save them", witness Cynthia Vanzella wrote on Twitter.

The Muslim Council of Britain called what happened a "violent manifestation of Islamophobia".

The prime minister will chair a meeting of the emergency Cobra committee later. "All my thoughts are with those who have been injured, their loved ones, and the emergency services on the scene".

Finsbury Park Mosque Chairman Mohammed Kozbar tweeted his condolences for the "cowardly attack".

At least two witnesses told Sky News that there were three men in the van, but the Met Police statement seems to directly contradict that, saying no other suspects had been identified or reported to police.

The force added: "Due to the nature of this incident extra policing resources have been deployed in order to reassure communities, especially those observing Ramadan".

The victims had been breaking the Ramadan fast after worshipping at nearby Finsbury Park mosque.

"The Muslim Community in this area is horrified at this incident and is concerned and shocked at the events".

London vehicle hits pedestrians, police say 'number' of injuries
Finsbury Park mosque was once a notorious hub for radical Islamists but has entirely changed in recent years under new management. Khan added that the attack appears to be on a specific community, like attacks in Manchester, Westminster, and London Bridge.

"The man, he tried to escape. but they caught the driver", Warra said.

Onlookers posted that more than 10 people had been knocked over and armed units were at the scene.

Witnesses described hearing the man, who was detained by members of the public at the scene, shout: "I'm going to kill Muslims". They are investigating the crash as suspected terrorism. "No one! No one!"

The incident was being treated as a potential terrorist attack said Prime Minister Theresa May, which if confirmed would make it the fourth since March in Britain and the third to involve a vehicle deliberately driven at pedestrians.

A 48-year-old man has been arrested in connection with the attack Who was behind it?

'It was an attack that once again targeted the ordinary and the innocent going about their daily lives.

CNN talked with an eyewitness who said it did not appear to be an accident because the van apparently accelerated.

Several people have been injured after a van drove into a crowd of pedestrians in Finsbury Park north London.

The attacker struck as the area was busy with worshippers attending Ramadan night prayers at the mosque. The UK has been on high alert after a series of attacks. "One has been arrested and two ran away", he added.

Police said all the victims were Muslim and that a 48-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder.

Police have also denied rumours that a knife was involved.

Ratib Al-Sulaman told CNN he was sitting with friends two minutes away, when an "incident in front of the mosque" occurred.

His colleague Helen Whately, who represents Faversham and Mid Kent, said: "Shocked to wake to news of van attack on worshipers outside mosque". Police said the male driver had also been taken to hospital as a precaution and would receive a mental health assessment.
