One dead as van rams pedestrians near London mosque

One man has been confirmed dead with a further eight injured after a van drove into pedestrians outside a mosque in Finsbury Park, north London.

"I want to reassure both the local Muslim community but also Muslims across the United Kingdom that they will always have the support of this Government in fighting anti-Muslim hate crime". "Eight people injured were taken to three separate hospitals", police said in a statement, adding that two other people were treated for minor injuries.

"It appears that a white man in a van intentionally ploughed into a group of worshippers who were already tending to someone who had been taken ill", the Muslim Council reportedly said in a statement.

The leader of the opposition Labour Party, Jeremy Corbyn, in whose constituency the attack took place, said he was "totally shocked".

This incident followed a series of attacks in Britain.

On Fridays, worshippers can be seen heading to and from the several mosques in the area.

The group's general secretary, Harun Khan, said that eyewitnesses saw the van driver hit a number of Muslims.

According to the Independent, footage of the incident showed injured people motionless on the pavement as angry crowds surrounded a white man believed to be the driver.

Despite the change in leadership and a new focus on inter-faith relations, the mosque reported it had received a string of threatening emails and letters in the wake of the Paris attacks.

Hamza, known as the Hook Hand, is an Egyptian cleric who preached Islamic fundamentalism and militant Islamism from the London mosque until he was arrested in 2004 after a U.S. request to extradite him to face terrorism charges.

A 48-year-old suspected attacker was also sent to a hospital as a precaution and would be questioned after being discharged, police said. "An attack on one community is an attack on all of us", said Police Commissioner Cressida Dick. I said, 'We are not going to kill you.

Witnesses said the incident occurred as Muslims were leaving the mosque after the traditional night prayers in Ramadan called Tarawih - observed nightly throughout the holy month.

Its former imam Abu Hamza, who preached there from 1997 to 2003, was sentenced to life in prison in NY on terrorism charges in 2015.

I tried to stop him (the suspect), some people were hitting him but I said stop him and keep him until the police came.

London Mayor Sadiq Khan condemned an apparent anti-Muslim auto ramming incident outside a mosque in north London on Monday as a "horrific terrorist attack".

Toufik Kacimi, chief executive of the Muslim Welfare House, said the local community was "horrified" by the incident and appealed for calm.

- The Archbishop of Canterbury, Justin Welby, said "the appalling attack on Muslims in Finsbury Park is an attack on us all and on the culture and values of our country".

"He has assured me that his team is fully engaged and working in partnership with the London Metropolitan Police as the investigation into the abhorrent attack at Finsbury Park gets under way".
