Philando Castile verdict draws hundreds to rally in Washington Park

"The City of St. Anthony has concluded that the public will be best served if Officer Yanez is no longer a police officer in our city", the city said in a statement.

Castile's death was part of a series of high-profile shootings of African-Americans by police. Supporters of Philando Castile hold a portrait of Castile as they march along University Avenue in St. Paul, Minn., leaving a vigil at the state Capitol on Friday, June 16, 2017.

The incident, one of several deaths of black men and boys shot by USA police, sparked outrage and protests in St Paul. (Richard Tsong-Taatarii) Protesters gather in St. Anthony, Minn. on June 18 for a memorial rally in honour of Philando Castile.

Thousands of people have demonstrated after a Minnesota police officer who shot dead a black man during a traffic stop was acquitted of manslaughter.

After the verdict, the victim's mother Valerie Castile said: 'I'm mad as hell right now.

About 200 people turned out for that demonstration in Minneapolis - the state's largest city that borders St. Paul - according to the Star Tribune newspaper.

Ms Reynolds, whose video showed 32-year-old Mr Castile covered in blood as an officer pointed his gun at him, said he had been reaching for his licence when he was shot.

But no video existed of exactly what happened inside the vehicle.

Yanez, the son of a Mexican immigrant, testified during the trial in Ramsey County District Court that he feared for his life after Castile began reaching for a firearm that Castile had disclosed he had in his possession. "In the meantime, Officer Yanez will not return to active duty".

Friday's acquittal prompted swearing from Castile's family members.

"It was what I was expecting", she said.
