Trump attorney Sekulow issues controversial claim about alleged Trump 'investigation'

Donald Trump's lawyer, Jay Sekulow, was dispatched to pretty much every Sunday morning talk show to tell everyone to ignore that tweet where Trump said he was being investigated for obstruction of justice.

Sekulow said that Trump, in his tweet, was reacting to a story in the Washington Post, which was the first to report Mueller was examining whether Trump had tried to obstruct the probe by firing Federal Bureau of Investigation director James Comey in May.

Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein appointed Mueller as special counsel following Comey's ouster in early May.

A person familiar with the matter confirmed to USA TODAY that Trump is indeed under investigation by special counsel Robert Mueller and his team.

"Let me be clear here", he said. "No confusion. The president is not under investigation", Sekulow told Tapper.

"The tweet from the President was in response to the five anonymous sources that were purportedly leaking information to The Washington Post about a potential investigation of the president", Sekulow continued.

"This is the first time the president's overall approval rating has hit the 50% mark since late April", the site states. "I'm not prepared to say that there is proof you could take to a jury, but I can say there's enough that we ought to be investigating".

London van 'swerved' to hit pedestrians in Finsbury Park
Police and paramedics were called to Seven Sisters Road just after midnight following the incident near Finsbury Park Mosque. According to reports, at least ten people were hit outside the mosque with three of them being critically injured.

"The president has not been notified by anyone that he is under investigation", Sekulow told "Fox News Sunday", in a heated exchange with host Chris Wallace about whether Trump could be under investigation without knowing. However, that argument conveniently ignores that Comey was sacked more than a month ago, prior to the appointment of Mueller, and most importantly, that Comey's firing itself could have been the reason for opening an investigation into Trump's possible obstruction of justice.

"So the president responds - I want to be crystal clear here". But legal analysts say few criminal investigations begin with an identified target. Marco Rubio said Sunday that he does not expect Trump to seek to fire them.

In a two-part tweet posted before 7 a.m. Sunday, Trump wrote: "The MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN agenda is doing very well despite the distraction of the Witch Hunt". "We're agreed, then", Wallace said.

Mueller would be allowed, though not required, to answer that question, unless it involved material before a grand jury, the former White House lawyer said. Angus King of ME, an independent who caucuses with the Democrats.

Adam Schiff, the top Democrat on the House intelligence committee, defended Mueller and his team, noting that lawmakers from both sides of the aisle have praised his appointment.

"The message the President is sending through his tweets is that he believes the rule of law doesn't apply to him and that anyone who thinks otherwise will be fired", Ms Feinstein said.

The attorney, Jay Sekulow, appeared on several Sunday news programs to counter the impression that Trump has acknowledged he's become a target of the expanding Russian Federation probe. Sekulow said Trump "thought it was in the best interest of the American people" to fire Comey.
