Trump Investigated for Obstructing Justice, Financial Crimes

Trump's young presidency has been battered by allegations - under investigation both by Congress and the FBI - that Russian Federation interfered to sway the 2016 election in his favor, in possible collusion with Trump's campaign team.

The president wrote, "I am being investigated for firing the FBI Director by the man who told me to fire the FBI Director!"

Trump was referring to a memo prepared by Rod Rosenstein - and signed off on by Attorney General Jeff Sessions - that called for axing Comey because he, during the 2016 campaign, went around the department's chain of command. He said he does not know, however, whether special counsel Robert Mueller is investigating Trump now - and left little doubt that he hopes Mueller is doing just that.

The US President did not clarify what he was referring to in the early morning tweet, although he has frequently described reports about possible ties between members of his campaign and Russian Federation as a "witch hunt".

On Wednesday, the Post reported that Mueller, the special counsel, who was appointed after the firing of FBI director James Comey, is now looking at whether Trump attempted to obstruct the investigation into possible collusion between his campaign and Moscow by leaning on Comey to drop the probe.

Your headline and story "Comey testifies he was sacked over Russian probe", barely mentions that fired FBI director James Comey admitted under oath he told President Trump on three separate occasions that he was not, and never had been, the subject of any intelligence agency investigation regarding collusion with the Russians.

Trump was strongly critical of some of Comey's testimony but said Comey had vindicated him by saying while he was at the agency, Trump was not the subject of the FBI's Russian Federation probe. Robert Mueller reports to Rosenstein, but is authorized to pursue the investigation independently.

At a congresional hearing last week, Comey confirmed that he told Trump three times that Trump was not being investigated as part of the Russia-collusion probe, and Trump tweeted "total and complete vindication" at that time.

Trump on Thursday tweeted that the investigation was "the single greatest WITCH HUNT in American political history - led by some very bad and conflicted people!"

White House staffers have also informed reporters that right now the team is trying to limit the reverberations of a potential infuriated response from Trump to Mueller's latest announcement that the president is officially under investigation for obstruction of justice.

Just 1 in 5 support Trump's move to fire Comey
Comey testified in a Senate hearing last week that he believed he was sacked "because of the Russian Federation investigation". Mark Warner of Virginia, the panel's top Democrat , didn't provide any other details regarding the meeting.

The White House has denied any collusion, and Trump has repeatedly complained about the probe, saying Democrats can not accept his election win.

Trump sent more tweets early Friday morning attacking the investigation as "phony".

Yet Trump seemed to dispute that narrative weeks ago when he told NBC's Lester Holt he had Russian Federation on has mind. Trump cited the memo in firing Comey.

And on Thursday, the committee will hear testimony from Coats in a classified session - after he refused to say publicly last week whether Trump asked him to pressure Comey to back off Flynn.

The tweets immediately prompted concerns among lawmakers that Trump might try to can both Mueller and Rosenstein.

"If Trump were to fire Mueller and it could be shown that his goal was to impede the investigation, it could be additional evidence of obstruction of justice".

"And so he was reluctant to make the statement that I made", Comey said.

Comey was unabashed about accusing Trump and his administration of telling "lies", and said he began the practice of immediately making notes after talking with the president because "I was honestly concerned that he might lie" about the conversations.

Mueller's friendship with Comey and Mueller's selection of several investigators who have made campaign donations to Democrats are among the issues Gingrich is raising as problematic.
