Van ploughing into crowd in London kills one, leaves ten injured

A police forensic tent is erected at Finsbury Park in north London, where a vehicle struck pedestrians in north London Monday, June 19, 2017.

We have sent a number of resources to an incident in Seven Sisters Road.

An imam today protected from an angry mob the attacker who ploughed his van into worshippers outside a mosque in London, killing one person and injuring ten others.

A police statement said "One man was pronounced dead at the scene..."

Local police officers arrived on the scene, supported by armed police and the Territorial Support Group. Many police cars and ambulances responded to the scene. In a statement Khan said, "While this appears to be an attack on a particular community, like the bad attacks in Manchester, Westminster and London Bridge it is also an assault on all our shared values of tolerance, freedom and respect".

- London Mayor Sadiq Khan called the incident "a horrific terrorist attack".

One man died at the scene and 10 people were injured. The video of the crash early Monday morning was accessed by the AP.

The driver has been taken to hospital as a precaution but will then be taken into custody.

Police arrested the van's driver, but were trying to determine whether the collision was accidental or deliberate.

"No-one touch him! No-one, no-one!"

CNN national terror analyst Peter Bergen said the Finsbury Park neighborhood has a large Muslim population and the nearby mosque had a notorious reputation as a place where Islamist militants used to gather.

"Police say incident has all the "hallmarks" of a terrorist" incident.

The Muslim Council of Britain has called the attack act of "Islamophobia". The van driver tried to escape but people grabbed him.

"During the night, ordinary British citizens were set upon while they were going about their lives, completing their night worship", he said.

Eyewitnesses reported seeing police give emergency heart massage to at least one of the injured.

Eight people were taken to hospital and two more were treated for minor injuries at the scene.

Several worshippers were in the area at the time of incident after attending Ramzan prayers.

The incident is being investigated by the Counter Terrorism Command.

One person has been arrested.

Police have also denied rumors that a knife was involved.

Finsbury Park mosque was once a notorious hub for radical Islamists but has entirely changed in recent years under new management.

"All my thoughts are with those who have been injured, their loved ones and the emergency services on the scene", the Guardian quoted May, as saying.

Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn, whose constituency includes Finsbury Park, has said he was "totally shocked".

The Muslim Council of Britain confirmed that worshippers had been targeted in the attack.

The MCB said its "prayers are with the victims". The attack comes during the Muslim holy month of Ramadan.

The man, who did not want to be named, said: "The gentleman went straight down this road, people were just conversing, talking, just doing what we're doing".

Further details were not immediately available.

The incident occurred in the Seven Sisters Road area, outside the Finsbury Park mosque.

Transportation officials said roads in the area were being closed.
