English cardinal after mosque attack: 'Repudiate hatred and violence'

How Muslims feel after the Finsbury Park attack

Police have not yet formally released the suspect's name, but the Gazette's sister paper in Weston understands he is 47-year-old Darren Osborne, who grew up there.

One man was pronounced dead at the scene of the attack, although he had collapsed before it occurred and police said they were "continuing to establish whether there is any link between his death and the attack".

Searches are being carried out at a residential address, where Mr Osborne is listed as living, in the Cardiff area.

The Home Secretary Amber Rudd confirmed that the attack is being treated as a "terrorist incident".

Scotland Yard said they had arrested a 48-year-old man on suspicion of attempted murder.

"Someone called me and said it was him and I said "It can't be".

The Finsbury Park Mosque said the van "deliberately mowed down Muslim men and women leaving late evening prayers" at the mosque and the nearby Muslim Welfare House shortly after midnight.

The London Ambulance Service took nine people to three London hospitals.

"Our community is in shock", he said, urging people attending prayers to remain vigilant, a warning that was echoed by police.

Grenfell Tower Deaths Rise to 79, London Police Say
The devastating fire erupted in the early hours of June 14 trapping several sleeping residents at the 24-storey Grenfell tower . Mr Khan said an inquiry should be properly resourced so it can get the full truth about the fire as quickly as possible.

"So we pushed people away from him until he was safely taken by police into custody and put into the back of the van.

The United States stands in solidarity with the United Kingdom in the face of this terrorist attack and emphasizes our shared resolve to counter the plague of terrorism".

He said the attack was deliberate and targeted "innocent Londoners, many of whom were finishing prayers during the holy month of Ramzan".

Vehicles have also been also used to attack the public on London's Westminster Bridge, in Nice, France, and in Berlin.

Taxi driver Saleem Naema, 50, said: "I can't believe it. I am a Muslim".

An imam told British media he had protected the suspect from the crowd until police arrived to arrest him.

Muslim Council of Britain (MCB) condemned the terrorist attack adding it was a "violent manifestation" of rising Islamophobia. "By God's grace we managed to surround him and to protect him from any harm", Mahmoud said.

"In this case, if you compare it to other attacks in the period after 9/11 the determination it was terrorism actually came relatively quickly and there have been forceful statements coming out from the Muslim mayor of London and the Prime Minister condemning it as a terrorist atrocity". Police said extra personnel had been deployed to reassure Muslim communities in London and security outside mosques would be reviewed.
