Gunmen kill 8 security guards working at United States base in Afghanistan

Afghanistan is one of those places where war has never been short

Eight Afghan security guards from Bagram Air Base were killed and two wounded when gunmen opened fire on them at a village close to the base.

In November 2016, a suicide bombing inside the base killed four Americans and injured 17 people.

Bagram, around 50km north of the Kabul, houses the largest contingent of U.S. soldiers in the country. The Taliban are setting up nationwide attacks to regain their Afghanistan stronghold, while ISIS is trying to make new inroads into the country.

The Taliban-led insurgency has been rampant since late April when the militant group launched its annual rebel offensive in different places of the country, which had claimed hundreds of lives including militants, security personnel and civilians.

Britain Kicks Off Brexit Talks With European Union
That financial issue is already a bone of contention, as is Brussels' refusal to discuss a new free trade deal until after it is resolved.

United States troops in Afghanistan now number about 8 400, and there are another 5 000 from North Atlantic Treaty Organisation allies, a far cry from the USA presence of more than 100 000 six years ago.

Seven American soldiers were wounded in an insider attack by an Afghan soldier at Camp Shaheen near the northern city of Mazar-i-Sharif on Saturday.

Bagram Airfield, some 50 km north of Afghan capital of Kabul, has been serving as a main USA and NATO military base in Afghanistan over the past 16 years.
