ICC Champions Trophy 2017: Grand celebrations in Pakistan as team returns home

They defeated Bangladesh, New Zealand, Australia in the league stage. On the other hand Pakistan lost their first match against India their arch-rivals, won their second fixture against South Africa in a rain curtailed game and their third victory came against Sri Lanka when they nearly made a mess of a small chase.

Seam bowlers Mohammad Amir and Ali took three wickets apiece to lead the Pakistan bowling attack in the country's first appearance in the final of the limited-overs tournament which is regarded as a mini-World Cup.

"It's been an up and down ride for us but I'm just so proud of the boys", Pakistan coach Mickey Arthur told Sky Sports.

Left-arm fast bowler Amir, whose career was nearly ended on the other side of London's River Thames by a ban and jail term he received for his part in a spot-fixing scam during a 2010 Test against England at Lord's, was superb.

Put into bat, the Men in Green had a flawless start as both Azhar Ali and Zaman shared a 128-run opening stand to put their team on road of a massive first innings-score. On the greatest stage sparked further by the rivalry of the two nations, Fakhar could have been forgiven for playing a more contained game.

"Rohit, Dhawan and Kohli have been in tremendous form so I was looking for early wickets - and I did it", said Amir.

Chasing a challenging total of 339 runs, India bowed down before the Pakistani bowlers and got all out for mere 158 runs in 33.3 overs.

The young India all-rounder after impressing with his bowling effort, was the lone talking point of the Indian batting in the final.

Pakistan skipper Sarfraz thrilled with emphatic turnaround
Apart from Pandya, no other Indian batsmen could play freely and were found struggling against a steaming Pakistan bowling attack. The left-arm pacer extracted movement both in the air and off the pitch and quite a few of his deliveries were nearly unplayable.

"They outplayed us, they were more intense and passionate on the day", he said.

Kohli, who was dropped at first slip by Azhar Ali in the previous ball, tried a flick to the on-side but could only manage a leading edge straight to Shadab Khan at point.

Pakistan had entered the tournament ranked eighth on the ICC ODI Team Rankings, but courtesy its victories against higher-ranked sides, finished in sixth place, which means it now looks well set to qualify automatically for the ICC Cricket World Cup 2019.

Pandya was involved in a mix-up with Ravindra Jadeja and was run-out. Zaman, in the fourth over, nicked Jasprit Bumrah to the keeper, only to be let off by no ball. By the time the unsafe Fakhar was dismissed, he had caused carnage with shots all around the Oval and had made a magnificent 114 as Pakistan reached 200.

But the run-out Pakistan's openers had threatened arrived when Fakhar's failure to respond to Azhar's call saw the former ODI captain fall by a distance.

Hardik Pandya cheered India fans in a capacity crowd as he hit three sixes off succesive balls to bring up a dashing fifty.

The 27-year-old Fakhar, however, put the setback behind him to complete a 92-ball hundred when he swept star off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin for his 12th four.
