Palestinian groups deny IS claim of fatal stabbing of Israeli policewoman

Israeli policemen secure the scene of the shooting and stabbing attack outside Damascus gate in Jerusalem's old city

The three assailants, armed with an automatic weapon and knives, carried out near simultaneous attacks at two adjacent locations on Friday. In the second incident, a Palestinian fatally stabbed a border policewoman before being shot dead by police.

The female officer identified as Hadas Malka, later succumbed to her wounds.

In addition to Trump Jr, PM Benjamin Netanyahu was also miffed and requested that Yuval Rotem, the Director General of the MFA, as well as the Israeli Embassy in London, act to have the BBC acknowledge that the headline was misleading.

With eight days remaining of Ramadan, Israeli security forces are reassessing the situation in an effort to keep the area safe for all residents and visitors to the city.

The jihadist group has a major presence across Israel's southern border in Egypt's Sinai Peninsula, where it carries out frequent deadly attacks on the security forces.

"I have instructed the police to reinforce security arrangements and checking procedures in the plaza around Damascus Gate", Netanyahu said at a weekly cabinet meeting, explaining that he was consdiering making the zone a "sterile area".

In response to the attack, Israeli security services said that they were canceling entry permits for West Bank Palestinians to visit relatives inside Israel during the Muslim holy month of Ramadan.

Last week U.S. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson said the Palestinians had agreed to stop the payments but both the Palestinians and Israel disputed the claim.

That financial issue is already a bone of contention, as is Brussels' refusal to discuss a new free trade deal until after it is resolved.

It was reported to be the first time the Islamic State group has claimed an attack in Israel.

Hamas spokesman Sami Abou Zouhri said the IS claim was an attempt to "muddy the waters", adding that the attack was carried out by "two Palestinians from the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine and a third from Hamas".

The three were identified by police as two men aged 18 or 19 and another man, all from the West Bank. In 2016, a truck ramming attack that killed four soldiers at a Jerusalem tourist site could have had links to the group, Israeli authorities said, but Islamic State did not claim responsibility.

At least 252 Palestinians and one Jordanian citizen have been killed since the violence began.

Israel blames the violence on incitement by Palestinian political and religious leaders compounded by social media sites that glorify violence and encourage attacks.

In the West Bank city of Bethlehem, an Israeli settler was injured in a stabbing attack, the Israeli army said in a statement.

Furthermore, the soldiers condiscated 40 Palestinian cars, some of them without valid licence plates, and distributed leaflets warning that the military will conduct repeated invasions and searches of homes, and will keep the siege imposed on tghe village.
