Police release video after Seattle shooting

Seattle Police officers cradle two children with a third in the back of the car after a shooting occurred at the Bretter Family Place Apartments in Magnuson Park Sunday

Charleena Lyles, 30, was shot and killed by police Sunday morning after the woman had called police to report a burglary. Two officers arrived and fired their service weapons at Lyles after she allegedly displayed a knife, police said. "I could have taken her down", Monika Williams, Lyles' sr, said.

"She let them in, then she started talking all insane about how the officers weren't going to leave", one officer says on the tape. According to a statement from Seattle police, there were "several children" in the apartment at the time of the shooting when Lyles "confronted" officers with a knife.

Two officers had gone to Lyles' apartment on Sunday after she reported a burglary.

In a press release, the Seattle Police Department said the two officers involved are now not on duty. There's no way you could've taken a taser and taken her down? Our heart goes out to Lyles' family, especially her motherless children.

A court-ordered federal monitor issued a report in April asserting that the department had made a positive turnaround and that use of force by officers was down, reported the Times.

Portugal 2-2 Mexico - Player of the Match - Ricardo Quaresma
Portugal players will wear black armbands against Mexico in the today to honour compatriots that passed away from forrest fires. Yet for all their probing, Mexico struggled to find openings against a resolute Portugal back line early on.

"Hey, get back! Get back!" an officer shouts, a call echoed by the other officer, before a volley of gunshots are heard. An arrest report for the June 5 encounter describes Lyles as speaking bizarrely about wanting to "morph into a wolf", about the officers being devils and also members of the Ku Klux Klan.

On the dashcam audio of Sunday's incident, officers can be heard greeting Lyles and asking questions about the burglary report. Both officers have been placed on administrative leave.

KOMO, a local news station, notes that it's not clear exactly why the police shot Lyles. Police had drawn their weapons during that incident, though one officer managed to convince Lyles to drop the scissors. "And when you have young children involved in what occurred, that witnessed it, that experienced it and no longer have a mother, coupled with the fact that I believe she was calling 911 for help herself, I think we have a responsibility to thoroughly investigate and evaluate that sort of case". The parallels between Lyles's shooting and that of Castile's, along with the countless other police shootings, primarily of black people, have not gone unnoticed.

Police released audio Monday from the fatal shooting of a mother of three in Seattle that took place the day before. Florida Carroll holds her grandson Quayvis Carroll as they visit a memorial for a woman set up outside an apartment building at Magnuson Park in Seattle on Sunday, June 18, 2017.

The deadly shooting is expected to be reviewed by the department's Force Investigation Team and the Office of Professional Accountability, according to the mayor and city police Chief Kathleen O'Toole. Both officers, who have not been identified, opened fire on Lyles.
