Presidential polls: Candidate's name to be announced before June 23: Venkaiah Naidu

This three-member committee was constituted by Shah last week and it comprised senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leaders Rajnath Singh, M. Venkaiah Naidu and Arun Jaitley. The elected representatives - all whom will vote in the election - will sign the papers nominating the NDA candidate. Venkaiah Naidu said, adding that he hoped for opposition support to Bihar Governor Ram Nath Kovind's candidature.

Naidu, after the meeting, told the media that the name of the Presidential candidate would be announced before June 23.

The BJP leaders also had meetings with AIADMK leader M Thambidurai and CPI leader S Sudhakar Reddy, Samajwadi party patriarch Mulayam Singh Yadav and BSP leader Satish Chandra Mishra.

On the other hand, several BJP leaders have claimed that the party's choice for the post of the President will be a political person with strong BJP affiliation.

The election for the next President of India is to be held on July 17 as President Pranab Mukherjee will demit the office on July 25.

The nomination process for the Presidential Election began from June 14 with the issuance of a notification and the last date for filing of nomination is June 28.

Gunmen kill 8 security guards working at United States base in Afghanistan
Bagram, around 50km north of the Kabul , houses the largest contingent of U.S. soldiers in the country. In November 2016, a suicide bombing inside the base killed four Americans and injured 17 people.

According to IANS, the board members will be briefed about the consultation of the three-member party committee formed to evolve consensus with the Opposition on the subject.

The BJP, which has an edge in the electoral college, is seeking to muster maximum support for its nominee to ensure a comfortable victory.

Multiple sources have told HT that former diplomat Gopalkrishna Gandhi could be the potential opposition candidate, with Left parties pushing for Mahatma Gandhi's grandson for the country's highest post. "Only after being proposed by the government or by the ruling party, we can take a decision".

An election to choose the next President of India appears inevitable as the initial round of talks between the BJP and the opposition is about to end. "The BJP leaders did not give any name to Congress President Sonia Gandhi but they wanted us to reveal the name of our candidate".

"Of course, we did not suggest any name". Mr Naidu also spoke to Sharad Yadav of JD (U).
