Simona Halep talks about her epic comeback against Elina Svitolina

The Latvian powered her way to a 7-6 (7/4) 3-6 6-3 victory to become as the youngest player to reach a grand slam final since Caroline Wozniacki in NY eight years ago.

Coincidentally, Bacsinszky also celebrated her birthday today, turning 28.

Simona Halep has beaten No. 2 Karolina Pliskova to reach the French Open final, where she will face the unseeded Jelena Ostapenko.

"I felt a little bit tight because it was a semi-final", she said.

"Then every match I was playing better and better and I got my confidence, and I think it works pretty well".

"I was always playing aggressive and trying to hit the ball when I have the chance".

The fast conditions have helped the Czech and, after Halep controlled the first set, Pliskova found her range on her big serve and forehand in the second.

If Pliskova defeated Halep on Thursday, she would have automatically claimed the No. 1 spot in the WTA rankings.

Karolina Pliskova has leveled her semifinal match against Simona Halep at the French Open.

United Kingdom hope for Brexit deal like 'no other'
However, EU leaders are also said to be determined not to allow concessions to Britain that might encourage others to quit. The UK wants to begin working out the details of a trade agreement alongside the terms of the withdrawal process.

Fifth seed Svitolina twice served for the match at 5-2 and 5-4 in the second set and then had match point at 6/5 in the tie-break. I have the mentality to win, but it's gonna be tough.

The Romanian was under pressure early in the decider but finally chased down a forehand and fired a brilliant cross-court victor to grab a 3-1 lead.

The now retired Ivanovic was present at Roland Garros on Thursday and was honored by the French tennis federation in a ceremony after the first semifinal.

In what was seen as the most open grand slam tournament in living memory, it is perhaps no surprise that a real outlier has come through to reach the final.

Halep sustained an ankle injury in that defeat that appeared to jeopardise her French Open hopes, but she has made a quick recovery and now is just two wins away from a maiden Grand Slam title. The last woman to win her first title in a Grand Slam event was Australian Chris O'Neil at the 1978 Australian Open, and the last man to do it was Gustavo Kuerten at Roland Garros in 1997.

But that would be to discount the threat of Latvia's fearless youngster Jelena Ostapenko and Swiss 30th seed Timea Bacsinszky who are first on Court Philippe Chatrier.

In five previous French Open appearances, she won a total of two matches.

The 6-foot-1 right-hander - whose twin sister Krystyna is a left-handed pro - struggles with her movement on the dirt and prefers to play quicker points.

If she wins, she'll be one of the biggest outsiders ever to take the title. Pliskova would replace Angelique Kerber atop the rankings by making it to Saturday's final in Paris.
