Van rams Muslim worshippers in London, PM May condemns "sickening" attack

How Muslims feel after the Finsbury Park attack

The suspect, who lived in Wales and was identified as Darren Osborne, was held by a crowd who had witnessed him drive a van into a group of Muslim faithful, Efe news reported.

At least one person was killed and 10 others were injured when the lone assailant drove a van into a crowd of Muslims gathered outside the Muslim Welfare House, near the Finsbury Park Mosque, where they had been attending Ramadan prayers.

After the latest terrorist attack in London early Monday morning, the Windsor Islamic Council is using social media to condemn hate crimes against Muslims and to promote respect for all religions.

"He was sitting and holding him like that, people kept holding him", Ali said.

Witness Khalid Amin told BBC television that the driver of the van was shouting: "I want to kill all Muslims".

"There has been far too much tolerance of extremism. including Islamophobia", she said.

Neil Basu, senior national co-ordinator for counter-terrorism policing, said restraint shown by locals was "commendable". "We've made it very clear to our British allies that we stand ready to provide any support and assistance that they may need", White House spokesman Sean Spicer told reporters at a briefing.

One elderly man, who had collapsed just before the incident, was pronounced dead at the scene, but it is not yet known whether his death was directly linked to the attack.

After the London Bridge attack earlier this month, London mayor Sadiq Khan's office reported a 40 percent increase in racist incidents in the capital and a fivefold increase in anti-Muslim incidents.

Speaking to reporters Monday, the imam, Mohammed Mahmoud, said he and others acted to "extinguish any flames of anger or mob rule that would have taken charge had this group of mature brothers not stepped in".

Police have been searching a residential address in Pentwyn, a suburb to the northeast of Cardiff, where Osborne has been listed as living.

It will assign more police in the London area.

She added: "I saw a lot of people injured".

Manchester was also hit on May 22 when a suicide bomber killed 22 people at an Ariana Grande concert.

The Met Police said extra police patrols were being deployed to reassure the public and those observing Ramadan.

The Finsbury Park mosque was associated with extremist ideology for several years after the 9/11 attacks in the United States but was shut down and reorganized.

Police arrested the van's driver, but were trying to determine whether the collision was accidental or deliberate.
