Ed Gillespie Appears To Eke Out Win In Virginia's Republican Gubernatorial Primary

Polling leading into Tuesday had Perriello, who jumped in to the race in January, even with Northam, who locked down the entire statewide Democratic apparatus more than a year ago.

Perriello is touting his progressive credentials and has the support of the Vermont senator as well as Massachusetts Sen. Sanders, and ran as an "unapologetic liberal". And in the past decade, both Republicans and Democrats have managed to keep their party pretty organized when it comes to primaries with as little dispute as possible, or running a convention as was the case with the GOP back in 2013 when Ken Cuccinelli lost to our current Gov. Terry McAuliffe.

Virginia's Democratic Sens. Tim Kaine and Mark Warner, along with attorney general Mark Herring have endorsed Northam. Several political watchdogs called the race for Northam less than a hour after the polls closed. You all said that someone who supported our president, somebody who supported President Trump ... somebody who was out financed five-to-one ... somebody who was fighting against the establishment could never win!

In Floyd County, where Republicans have long dominated local politics, Stewart's message of stauch protection of icons of the loss in America's Civil War more than a century and a half ago, along with hateful rhetoric about immigrants and race, gave the Prince William County supervisor a big win over Gillespie and leaves local Republicans worries about their own political futures down the pike. His reply: "I said, 'Damn right I am!'"

Stewart, an ardent supporter of President Donald Trump, has made preserving Confederate history a top priority, along with immigration, saying he wants any person living in the country illegally who is arrested in Virginia to be deported, "no questions asked". Gillespie rarely mentioned Trump and aired commercials that showed he was an adviser to former President George W. Bush.

As Stewart grew a step closer to win, Gillespie's supporters who had gathered at Hilton Hotel ballroom in the Richmond suburbs, expressed shock and disappointment.

Stewart won 56.89 percent of the vote in Floyd County (380 votes to Gillespie's 227).

"He was the most conservative candidate on the ballot". Frank Wagner, R-7th District, finished with 13.7 percent.

Despite gaining USA citizenship in 1917, the island has been stuck in a legal limbo between being a colony and a full-on state. Critics feel these board members may be motivated by a desire to make money, or threaten the island's sovereignty.

Virginia race is receiving national attention as it is one of only two states with governor offices up for election this year.

The turnout in the Democratic primary far exceeded the last one in 2009, when about 320,000 people voted. This post is also a good launching pad for higher office: Aside from attorney general, Virginia doesn't have any other statewide elected offices besides governor and USA senator.

Statewide, the race between Reeves and Vogel was also within 2 percentage points at the Virginia Gazette's deadline.

Northam's command of the state party's machinery, including the endorsement of every Democrat in the General Assembly and most Democrats in the state's congressional delegation, simply turned out more voters.

Northam easily defeated former U.S. Rep. Tom Perriello in the more closely watched Democratic contest by almost 12 points, which pitted the progressive Perriello against the establishment Northam.

"Our nominees will be traveling across the Commonwealth providing a clear alternative to the Northam/Perriello race to the left", the site says. Most polls show Gillespie with a double-digit lead.

In Richmond, Kelly Barrows cast her ballot for Perriello because she said the former congressman more closely aligns with her progressive views. Northam raised almost $6.5 million in the primary compared to Perriello's $4 million haul, which helped the lieutenant governor saturate Washington-area television stations with ads over the last few weeks.
