Google's Top Lawyer: Four Ways Google, YouTube Will Help Tackle Extremism

Google launches four steps to tackle online terrorism

To describe it simply, adverts that attempt to lure folks to join the ranks of a terrorist organisation will redirect users to content that debunk terrorist recruiting messages.

Google's general counsel Kent Walker on Sunday outlined four measures the company is taking to identify, remove and prevent terror-related video and content from its online properties. The anti-hate group said the companies "have done little to counter the use of their platforms to spread hateful, false "information", from conspiracy theories accusing various minority groups of plotting against America to websites promoting Holocaust denial and false "facts" about Islam, LGBT people, women, Mexicans and others".

Facebook ramped up its use of artificial intelligence including such things as language understanding and image matching to help identify and to remove content as quickly as possible, said the company in one of its blog posts. Google will also employ engineering resources and technology help to identify the terrorist video content.

He said video analysis models had been used to find and assess more than half the terrorism-related content that Google had removed over the past six months. "And we have developed partnerships with expert groups, counter-extremism agencies, and the other technology companies to help inform and strengthen our efforts", Google added. Google will support these NGOs with operational grants.

"This allows us to benefit from the expertise of specialized organizations working on issues like hate speech, self-harm, and terrorism".

Solar border wall with Mexico
The crowd was excited to hear what the president had to say. "It's a catastrophe if we would have agreed". They said a solar wall may be more practical than a traditional wall. "I thought it was marvelous".

This means the tech giant will, for example, take a tougher position on videos containing supremacist or inflammatory religious content, "even if they do not clearly violate its policies", says Reuters.

Step three will entail making it more hard for videos that may not violate community standards but all the same have content that is supremacist or inflammatory religious in nature. In addition to beefing up its use of technology and hiring more flesh and blood workers, Google said it will take a tougher stance on videos that are not in clear violation of its policies.

Fourth, YouTube will be expanding its role against radicalization, with targeted advertising that will redirect potential Islamic State or ISIS recruits toward anti-terrorism content that will hopefully change their mind in taking up arms.

Google has also previously committed to working with other tech giants such as Facebook, Microsoft, and Twitter to establish and worldwide forum to tackle terrorism online.

And we'll keep working on the problem until we get the balance right.
