'I hope I don't get killed for being black today'

Tyreke Smith gained extra attention at Ohio State's camp this weekend.

.

Naturally, Smith who is one of the top defensive end recruits in the country, had plenty of eyes on him during the camp.

Four-star defensive end Tyreke Smith recently attended Ohio State's one-day camp on Saturday and although he doesn't have much to prove as he has almost 40 offers from programs such as Alabama, Florida, Georgia, LSU, Michigan, Notre Dame, Oklahoma, Oregon, Penn State, Texas, UCLA and USC, he still showed up as he knew cameras would be on him.

Smith, a 17-year-old defensive end, told ElevenWarriors.com he "decided to wear the shirt because I wanted to bring attention to the epidemic of blacks being killed at an alarming rate".

Here's a look at the controversial shirt.

Now, Smith is using his massive platform-as a recruit that programs worth hundreds of millions of dollars are pursuing, and as a future college athlete-to shine a light on the issue.

Cristiano Ronaldo silent about future after Portugal's Confed Cup win
The veteran forward used one touch to clear goalkeeper Guillermo Ochoa and then easily found the open net. He skipped the post-match press conference which he was supposed to attend as the man of the match.

The Buckeyes hold a strong advantage over the Nittany Lions to land the top OH recruit. "What we would like to do is have people talk about these issues to reduce the murder rate of African Americans".

On top of the general traumas and pressures Tyreke faces as a black man in this country, his particular county reached a state-high of 168 homicides previous year.

"To see or hear about so many senseless killings, it tends to have a negative impact on you", Smith said. "You start to wonder if we should move away ... but most, 'why?'"

The teen's brother told Eleven Warriors that he encouraged him to wear the shirt, noting how it would get people talking on social media.

Smith, and his older brother Malik-a basketball player at Bryant-told Eleven Warriors that the shirt is meant to protest all violence against African-Americans, including police brutality and violence in black neighborhoods.

"I made a decision to wear the shirt because I wanted to bring attention to the epidemic of blacks being killed at an alarming rate", Smith said.
