United Kingdom population hits 65.6 million after biggest annual increase in 70 years

Demographers' latest calculations show there were an estimated 65,648,000 people living in the country at the end of June previous year.

While London's growth rate was significantly higher than the rest of the country, it was also unusual with respect to national internal migration.

London's population surged by more than 100,000 a year ago to hit a new all-time high of nearly 8.8 million, latest official data reveals today.

Britain has experienced a population increase of five million people in just over a decade, between 2005 and 2016.

ONS said global migration into Britain during the year accounted for nearly two thirds of the increase, amounting to 336,000 people, with just under 36 percent or 193,000 people making up the rest through the number of births, less than the number who died.

In comparison, the 11 years between 2005 and 2016 saw an increase of 5 million in Britain's population.

The ONS noted they recorded a rise in births and fewer deaths in the year to June 2016, but said the main driver of population growth is still net migration, which represented 62.4 per cent of the total increase.

What should be of concern is the increasing rate at which the population is growing.

Cosby trial jurors' names released
The juror said the majority of jurors had initially wanted to acquit Cosby on all three counts of aggravated indecent assault. A juror in Bill Cosby's sexual assault trial said Thursday the panel was nearly evenly split in its deliberations.

Around the United Kingdom, the population of England jumped by 481,800 (0.9%) to 55,268,100 - and is now more than 55 million for the first time.

The populations increased in 364 local authority areas, while in 26 authority areas there were fewer people.

"These figures for the year up to June 2016 reflect the situation as it has been for many years now, with net migration being the highest driver of population growth", said Population Matters head of campaigns, Alistair Currie.

London was home to the largest population boom with 1.3 percent growth - a rate more than twice that of Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland and three regions in the north of England.

"Overall, natural change accounted for 35.8 per cent of the population change, net worldwide migration for 62.4 per cent and other changes 1.8 per cent". Before that, it took 35 years, between 1970 and 2005, to increase by the same amount.

England saw the biggest jump in population over the year, with a rise of 481,800, or 0.9%, to 55,268,100.

Eight of the 14 authorities where population went up by 2% or higher were in London.

One point to note in the figures is that, although it continues to age, the population is ageing at a slower rate than in recent years.
