Bengal's Kanyashree initiative wins United Nations Public Service Award

West Bengal wins prestigious UN Public Service Award- India Tv

This initiative gained popularity in the state and helped to reducing illiteracy amongst girls and child marriage drastically.

She reiterated the commitment of the Government to innovate and implement more such public service programmes to cater to the needs of the most vulnerable sections of the society, in line with the 2030 agenda for the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Since the launch of the project, as many as 40 lakh girl students have been benefitted.

India was named first in the Asia-Pacific group for the category: 'Reaching the Poorest and Most Vulnerable through Inclusive Services and Participation.' Kanyashree Prakalpa seeks to improve the status and well-being of girls, specifically those from socio-economically disadvantaged families through small cash transfers. Mamta Banerjee was given the award by UN Assistant Secretary General at a ceremony in Hague in Netherlands.

"It's a great honour to receive such an award from United Nations Public Service Forum and at Bengal, we convene administrative meetings at various blocks in the districts and involve all the public servants, including the block development officers, for better co-ordination and smooth functioning of several projects", Mamata said while receiving the award.

A trophy and a certificate was received by Chief Minister of West Bengal Mamata Banerjee.

The Public Service Awards were started in the year 2003.

Earlier, Banerjee also participated in a ministerial conversation on "Accelerating Innovation in Public Service" as part of the United Nations Public Service Forum 2017. "Receiving the first prize from the United Nations for Kanyashree is a huge honour and recognition", she tweeted. She also outlined measures taken by her government to ensure basic amenities, healthcare, food support and education to people in her state. The award that she later dedicated to the people of West Bengal.
