'A Very Narrow Path' to Repeal Obama's Healthcare Law

Five Republican senators have announced they will not support the bill, which is created to repeal and replace Obamacare, in its current form.

Trump said it was hard to weigh competing forces while drafting the bill, but that the bill revealed by the Senate this week was a good start. Pressure from all sides of the debate will enormous over the coming days if the Senate leaders stick to their schedule of holding a final vote on the measure next week. But I think we're going to get it.

I once again ask that the leadership of Congress from both parties come together to forge true bipartisan supported healthcare legislation for the good of our entire country.

Sen. Dean Heller, R-Nev., who faces a competitive re-election race in 2018, says he has "serious concerns about the bill's impact on the Nevadans who depend on Medicaid".

White House aides say Trump intends to be involved in talks with the four senators.

Cantwell is hoping to organize opposition to the bill.

Healthcare stocks closed down 0.1 % on Friday, clawing back some losses after the sector dropped sharply late in the session on Heller's announcement. Former President Obama weighed in on BCRA as well, saying that it's "not a health care bill" and criticizing the "fundamental meanness at the core of this legislation".

The Senate bill is similar to the House bill but includes additional funding to stabilize the Obamacare health insurance exchanges and, so far, does not contain a provision that would penalize people for not having health care coverage.

Koch rep says bill insufficiently conservative
He said Friday he would vote against the bill in its current form but did not rule out supporting a revamped, final version of it. Republican Leader Mitch McConnell has a challenge on unifying his party to successfully repeal the Affordable Care Act.

The conservative quartet said they oppose the initial version, which will be subject to a slew of amendments during floor proceedings, for "a variety of reasons" but declared themselves "open to negotiation and obtaining more information before it is brought to the floor". Ted Cruz of Texas, Rand Paul of Kentucky, Mike Lee of Utah and Ron Johnson of Wisconsin. They may soften some aspects of the widely condemned House bill, but not its basic philosophy and goals. Essentially the state governments become the primary decision makers on who gets Medicaid now as opposed to having it be available to everybody who meet certain criteria?

Instead, with the Senate bill, Americans get the same structure of the ACA with all the same problems made worse.

In a Twitter comment Saturday, Trump voiced optimism about passage of the Republican plan, saying, "I can not imagine that these very fine Republican Senators would allow the American people to suffer a broken ObamaCare any longer!"

Democrats accuse Republicans of sabotaging Obamacare, and say the Republican bill will make healthcare unaffordable for poorer citizens while cutting taxes for the wealthy. Even President Trump reportedly called a different version of the bill mean.

"A lot of employers (now) have plans that are actually priced above the maximum HSA contribution", so people end up paying for out-of-pocket expenses with after-tax funds, said Eric Dowley, a senior vice president with Fidelity's HSA business.

McConnell said in an interview with Reuters last month that he told Trump early on in the process that he did not need his help but that there may be a role for him later.

The reductions would apply to states such as Kansas and Missouri that did not expand Medicaid under Obamacare and still use the program mainly to cover the elderly, pregnant women, children and people with disabilities. It also would provide more generous tax subsidies than the House bill to help low-income people buy private insurance.
