Arab states issue 13 demands to end Qatar crisis

On Friday, Saudi Arabia and allies boycotting Qatar issued a list of demands that includes shutting down the Doha-based al Jazeera channel and cutting diplomatic ties to Iran.

All means of funding to groups designated as terrorists by Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Bahrain, Egypt and the United States, among other countries, must be cut off.

The Arab countries signaled that if Qatar refuses to comply by the 10-day deadline, they will continue to restrict its access to land, sea and air routes indefinitely amid mounting economic pressure on the Persian Gulf nation. Revoke Qatari citizenship for existing nationals where such citizenship violates those countries' laws. The base is a guarantor of the security of Qatar and the Gulf, and demands for its closure showed interference in our ties with Doha, he added.

Trade and commerce with Iran that complies with worldwide and US sanctions will be allowed to continue.

Thrust into the middle of the crisis, the head of Al-Jazeera's English language service said the network remained committed to continuing its broadcasts.

"Qatar may not fully comply with the list, but it has to take these demands into consideration and finally make a move toward reviewing its foreign policy and the editorial line of the main media outlet, Al-Jazeera", Nader said.

Qatar is a member of the Gulf Cooperation Council with Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Saudi Arabia and the UAE. Freeze their assets, and provide any desired information about their residency, movements and finances.

Saudi Arabia and Iran are at odds over a number of regional issues, including Iran's nuclear program and what Saudis see as Tehran's growing influence in the kingdom's sphere of influence, especially in Syria, Lebanon and neighboring Yemen.

Gargash called on Qatar to stop harbouring individuals who are sanctioned regionally and internationally for terrorism, as he put it.

This sum will be determined in conjunction with Qatar. Qatar's only land routes go through Saudi Arabia, so it now relies exclusively on sea and air supplies. Its spiritual leader, Egyptian Sunni cleric Yusuf Qaradawi, is based in Qatar and appears regularly on Al-Jazeera.

Trendle also said that demands to shutter the network are "nothing but an attempt to muzzle a voice of democracy in the region and suppress freedom of expression".

-Hand over "terrorist figures" and wanted individuals from the four countries.

"Just yesterday the general sentiment we had was that perhaps the worldwide community and GCC will turn toward restoring ties".

The escalation was the culmination of tensions that have been simmering for decades.

"Specifically, this demand on compensation takes the region into unchartered territory". He said the USA had erred when it asked Gulf nations to release the demands. Moreover, the mere notion of shuttering al-Jazeera - and its multiple affiliates - was deemed out of the question.
