Comeback queen Kvitova wins Birmingham title

Lucie Safarova Aegon Classic Birmingham

In only her second tournament since being attacked by a burglar in her home, the Czech came from behind to beat Australian Ashleigh Barty in Birmingham.

Petra Kvitova is the new Aegon Classic Birmingham champion after an emotional 4-6, 6-3, 6-2 win over Ashleigh Barty at the Edgbaston Priory Club on Sunday.

Kvitova was playing only her second tournament and seventh match since she was attacked in December.

The win marked Kvitova's 20th career WTA title and showed she was in fine form ahead of the year's third grand slam.

Kvitova had to battle back from a set down against Barty, who only returned to tennis past year following a stint playing professional cricket in the Big Bash.

Meanwhile, a year after
finishing runner-up at the inaugural Mallorca Open, Anastasija Sevastova went one better in Spain, surviving three tough sets against Julia Goerges to win her first WTA title in seven years, 6-4, 3-6, 6-3.

Lucknow: 21 participants fall ill after attending Yoga day event
Modi said that the United Nations had accepted his proposal in record time to celebrate June 21 as the International Yoga Day. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi performed several yogic exercises at an event organized in Lucknow.

"It was an unbelievable week, an fantastic tournament".

"I came to play, to improve my game, I didn't really have any expectation".

Kvitova served out for the title in emphatic fashion, to love and ending with an ace, before celebrating, in her typically understated style, with a broad smile. Barty will now face Petra Kvitova in the final.

Kvitova then seemed to reset her game as the second set got underway. It's kind of a fairytale.

But Kvitova stepped up her game at the start of the
second, breaking for 2-0 and moving to the brink of levelling the match when she secured a double break to move 5-1 in front. "But I'm feeling confident, we've had a lot of grass court tennis now coming into Wimbledon, so hopefully we can play well tomorrow and transfer that through Eastbourne, and of course, Wimbledon". "I didn't expect this in my second tournament of my comeback". "You are an inspiration, a champion, we love you, we missed you and it is wonderful to have you back on court". And when I didn't play that many matches, it's always taking me more energy, I think. "She's such an inspiration", said the Australian. I've played some quality tennis and lost to only a couple of great players. "I think will give me some extra confidence that I am still able to fight, even if I lose the first set. So I'm really excited and I can't wait to get to Wimbledon".
