Democrats Have No Alternative to Nancy Pelosi

A handful of House Democrats - from Rep. Kathleen Rice (D-N.Y.) to Rep. Tim Ryan (D-Ohio), who Pelosi beat for re-election to her leadership post late previous year - have raised fears that their party may not be able to win back the House with Pelosi leading the caucus.

Republican Karen Handel will be the next member of Congress for the 6th district, not newcomer-turned-Democratic hero Jon Ossoff.

She said she feels "very confident" in the support she has from her caucus, but claimed ownership over the "timing" for her role as minority leader.

As the map stands now, Democrats arguably don't need to take a win in Georgia to take back control of the House for the first time since 2010.

But Pelosi defended herself during a Thursday press conference, bringing up the criticism unprompted.

According to Atlantic monthly, "Compared with November's results, the GOP margins of victory declined from almost 16 points to 6 in Montana, 23 points to less than 4 in Georgia, 21 points to 3 in SC, and 31 to about 7 in Kansas. On the other hand, independents and moderate Republicans turned off by Trump were the voters he needed to lock-in to win.

Just as Democrats accused Republicans of being sexist and racist for not electing Hillary Clinton last November, that seems to be the go-to excuse now. "And usually they go after the most effective leaders".

He added, "When she won ... then they said, 'we switch!' - to another program". "I don't know how many 'moral victories' the Democrats are going to be able to stomach before they realize it's time to actually start winning". But Pelosi maintained that familiar GOP strategy only proves she is an asset.

Philippines' Duterte: I Never Asked Washington for Help in Mindanao Siege
Cooperation between the USA and the Philippines is complicated by Duterte, a controversial figure. At least 200 militants are holed up in a corner of the town.

When pressed to give a name of who might fill that void, Rice said, "I look to a lot of my colleagues now".

House minority leader Nancy Pelosi is facing down a fresh threat to her job just days after Tuesday's special election setback in Georgia.

The Georgia race featured a nail-biting finish, with the possibility of flipping a traditionally-Republican district. "My decision to stay is not up to them", she said of her critics, noting that she welcomed and respected "the ambition that exists in my caucus" and members who are "having fun on TV".

When a reporter asked him if he thought House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi should be replaced, he would not say but did ask for an explanation from the party leadership. 'Nancy Pelosi is not the only reason that Ossoff lost.

Ohio Rep. Tim Ryan, who represents a district near Youngstown, challenged Pelosi for the minority leader post previous year but lost.

BENNETT: Pelosi still has broad support among House Democrats.

And for some, they point to questions about how their leaders, and Pelosi in particular, have fallen short in crafting an economic message that can counter Trump and yield election victories.
