Eid al-Fitr: What you need to know

Yesterday U.S. President Donald Trump broke away from a almost two-decade tradition of hosting an iftar dinner to commemorate Ramadan - the Islamic holy month of fasting.

According to the calculations conducted by the Shamakhi-based Tusi Astrophysical Observatory of the Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences (ANAS), the 1st of Ramadan-that is, when the moon appears - fell on May 27 this year, APA reported.

The Shia Muslim state of Iran, Oman and several other countries have reportedly not sighted the moon, meaning first day of Eid al-Fitr will fall tomorrow (Monday June 26).

Assam Governor Banwarilal Purohit and Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal today conveyed their greetings to people of the state on occasion of Eid-ul-Fitr.

Saudi Arabia, Qatar and the UAE have celebrated Eid-ul-Fitr on Sunday to mark the culmination of fasting and holy month of Ramzan. Many diplomatic posts overseas also host events during the Ramadan month of fasting and prayer.

Security personnel should offer Eid prayers only at protected places, said the advisory issued by Inspector General of Police, Kashmir zone, in wake of lynching of Deputy Superintendent of Police Muhammad Ayub Pandit on Friday. Most of the Muslim world kicked off celebrations that day, but because the holiday is set by Islam's lunar calendar and depends on the sighting of the new moon, some countries celebrate it a day later.

In his sermon, the chief Imam of Mambila Barracks Mosque, Major Hamisu Mustapha, admonished Muslims to use the lessons learnt during the Ramadan to foster unity.
