Fresh clashes in Kashmir after prayers mar Eid

The Indian forces fired tear gas shells and pellet guns at stone-throwing protesters that resulted in injuries to at least ten people. Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Mohammad Ayub Pandith was allegedly stripped naked and stoned to death by the mob as he was seen clicking pictures of people coming out of the mosque.

Eid al-Fitr was celebrated in the disputed Kashmir on Monday amid restrictions on movement imposed by the Indian authorities and pro-independence demonstrations and clashes between protesters and Indian forces at several places.

Clashes were also reported in the Sopore, Anantnag, Rajpora, Shopian and Safkadal areas in and on the fringes of the city. Youths started hurling stones at security forces as the masses poured onto the streets.

Top resistance leaders, Syed Ali Geelani and Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, were placed under house arrest to prevent them from addressing any Eid gathering.

Amid all this, the Home Minister's confidence that Eid will bring peace and happiness in the Valley somewhere indicates that the government has some special plans to deal with the situation of unrest in Kashmir.

President M Abdul Hamid Monday said the appeal of Eid-ul-Fitr is unique to build a peaceful and friendly society as it brings all people including rich-poor, elite and disadvantaged under the same umbrella.

Kashmir, a Muslim-majority Himalayan region, is held by India and Pakistan in parts and claimed by both in full.
