Istanbul Pride march to go on despite governor's ban

Nearly 50 years of pride for this 93-year-old mom

For several years, Pride Week in Istanbul attracte. "They can come there", added Mican, who stood trial for threats against LGBTI members ahead of the pride parade past year.

The celebratory tone of gay pride marches from San Francisco to Istanbul on Sunday were undergirded by an atmosphere of political expression and protest.

Turkish authorities have banned a march for gay, lesbian and trans rights due to take place today.

The same alt-right group who threatened this year's march said they would "intervene" if the march too place.

Although homosexuality has been legal in Turkey since 1923, the country has one of the worst records of human rights violations against LGBTQ people in Europe, and Turkey's LGBTQ community has been increasingly vocal about violence against members of the community. It said the area around central Taksim Square, where the march begins, was not designated for demonstrations.

"That decision ignores LGBTs and their supporters' right to peaceful assembly", it said. It asked the governor's office to reconsider and fulfill its obligations by providing security precautions.

The organizing committee for LGBTI pride week reacted to the decision of the Istanbul Governor's Office, saying banning the march contravenes worldwide conventions, Turkish law and the constitution.

Tomi Juric endured a tough night at the office, unable to hold the ball up well enough in the first period. Cameroon goalkeeper Fabrice Ondoa, Australia's Tim Cahill and Cameroon's Adolphe Teikeu contest the ball.

Up to 100,000 people took part in 2014's Pride march, making it one of the largest LGBTI Pride events in a predominantly Muslim nation. The following year, authorities banned parades in a surprise move citing public order and dispersed the crowds.

Last year, organisers were denied permission to march with the city on the edge over bombings blamed on Islamic State group and Kurdish militants, sparking anger from gay rights activists. LGBTI activists still attempted to converge on Taksim Square, leading to skirmishes with police.

Turkey imposed a state of emergency in the wake of last year's failed coup to unseat President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, with critics saying their freedoms are not safeguarded. Sunday's march is on the first day of the Eid al-Fitr holiday, marking the end of a month of fasting.

"We have to be as visible as possible", said Reyes, wearing a silver body suit and gray and purple headpiece decorated with rhinestones.

"We are not scared, we are here, we will not change", the Pride Committee said in a statement on Sunday, as reported by AFP.

According to Breaking News, the Turkish government say that there is no discrimination against those who are part of the LGBTQ society and that laws excluding discrimination on the basis of gender, race, ethnicity or religion protect all citizens.

'Furthermore the statement also legitimizes groups or individuals who make threats and commit hate crimes by suggesting that there are "sensitivities"'.

Protesters for "Black Lives Matter" also delayed the start of the Seattle parade, parade-goers said. "We experience it from our birth".
