Man catches girl who fell from NY amusement park ride

He looked up to see a girl dangling about 25 feet off the ground from a slow-moving gondola ride.

Lent said the other passenger in the two-person auto was telling the crowd that the girl couldn't breath because her head was stuck and the bar was choking her.

"I kept wondering like, is she alive because I keep hearing them say she's hanging by her neck", said Howard's daughter, 21-year-old Leeann Winchell. She lets go, strikes a tree limb on the way down, and is caught by people in the crowd.

They then encouraged her to let go so they could catch her.

Mr Howard and his daughter were among those who caught the girl when she fell. The two took the brunt of the girl's fall, collapsing to the ground themselves.

"Girl falling from ride at 6 Flags Great Escape and they have no means to rescue them", Lent wrote on her Facebook page overnight.

"No-one wants to put himself underneath a body like that, but I couldn't stand by and watch". It is unclear why the girl was hanging.

Air bag maker Takata bankruptcy expected Monday in Japan, US
In the US, Takata agreed in January to plead guilty to wire fraud for falsifying testing data and reports provided to carmakers. Two people briefed on the matter say most of Takata's assets will be sold to rival Key Safety Systems for $1.6 billion.

Ms Winchell, who is applying to be a nurse, said she and her father had visited the girl on Sunday at the hospital and she was in good spirits.

"As part of our annual practice an evacuation drill is conducted in partnership with local emergency personnel on this particular ride each spring", she said in an emailed response. Her fall was broken by a small crowd of park workers and attendees, but she was still injured, taken to Glens Falls Hospital, then to Albany Medical Center by helicopter.

"There does not appear to be any malfunction of the ride, but we have closed the attraction until a thorough review can be completed", an official said. "We were in the right place at the right time".

A 14-year-old girl was taken to hospital after she fell 25ft from a ride at a NY state amusement park and was caught in the outstretched arms of onlookers.

The operator had stopped the ride after being told a rider was in distress, the sheriff's office said.

Great escape said the New York State Labor Department cleared the ride for operation but the park will keep it closed during an internal review.
