Man convicted of 2nd-degree murder in death of Baby Doe

McCarthy was convicted Monday, June 26 of second-degree murder in the death of Bella Bond who became known as Baby Doe after her remains washed up on the shores of a Boston Harbor island.

Suffolk County prosecutors argued McCarthy, the then-boyfriend of Bella's mother Rachelle Bond, killed Bella and then put her body in a trash bag and dumped it into the water near Shore Island.

Bella's body was found on the beach of Deer Island in June 2015, having washed ashore wrapped in a trash bag. Under a second-degree murder conviction, a person is eligible for parole after serving 15 years in prison.

Monday marked the fifth day of deliberations for the jury, which had the choice between saying McCarthy was not guilty, guilty of murder in the first degree, guilty of murder in the second degree or guilty of involuntary manslaughter.

The judge recessed after the verdict was read to see if there were any objections to McCarthy also being sentenced Monday.

McCarthy's lawyer said Bond was the real killer.

The event, which is being hosted by Leslie Jones , will be live streamed on BET.com and it will also be available on YouTube . She'll probably win again this year, but she will, at least , have some competition from Missy Elliott, Cardi B and Remy Ma .

McCarthy's defense attorneys said the charge was largely based on the word of Rachelle Bond, a "scheming, manipulative woman" who lied about her daughter's death to cover up her own responsibility. Bond pleaded guilty in February to being an accessory after the fact to murder, as well as to larceny for the state welfare checks she received after Bella died. Those who gathered Sunday for the two-year anniversary wanted to make sure her short life would never again be forgotten.

Assistant District Attorney Deakin emphasized to the jury that they must not judge McCarthy, Bond and the other individuals involved in the case as a group of addicts. The girl was on the bed at the time, according to Bond, and Bond said her whole body bounced with the force of the blow. He said McCarthy had been obsessed with the occult for years.

Durant accused Michael Sprinsky, who was present, of being complicit in the death as part of McCarthy's circle.

Bond said McCarthy also threatened to kill her when she tried to leave the room with the girl's body.

"Justice for Bella", she said. Durant's claim led to a shouting match and her departure.

In a later discussion, Bond said she asked McCarthy what he did.
