North Korea dares again, conducts another rocket engine test

South Korean President Moon Jae-in shakes hands with Richard Haass president of U.S. think tank Council on Foreign Relations in a meeting at the presidential office Cheong Wa Dae

South Korea's military plans to deploy the Hyunmoo-2, which is created to hit targets as far as 800 kilometers (500 miles) away, after conducting two more test launches.

North Korea has tested a rocket engine that could be fitted to an intercontinental ballistic missile, a U.S. official said, in an apparent provocation ahead of a summit between President Donald Trump and the leader of South Korea.

The Hyunmoo-2 is test-fired from a mobile launch pad at a test site of the Agency for Defense Development in Anheung, South Korea, Friday, June 23, 2017.

A medium-range ballistic missile was launched from a test range in Hawaii at 7:20 pm local time, but the interceptor missile fired at sea from USS John Paul Jones, a guided-missile destroyer, missed the target.

"I'm an advocate of dialogue, but even dialogue is made possible by a powerful military, and even engagement is made possible by the ability to overpower North Korea".

Meanwhile, the latest American effort to test its shoot-down capability failed on Wednesday night, according to a statement from the US Missile Defense Agency.

He described as "personal views" his adviser's recent remarks in Washington that South Korea and the United States may consider scaling back their joint military exercises in exchange for North Korea freezing its nuclear and missile development programs. The Obama administration pushed for many sanctions against North Korea in the past years.

North Korean missile tests present a hard challenge for Moon.

USA officials speaking anonymously to several news agencies said the latest engine test, on Thursday, could be one stage of an intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) engine that would be able to reach the US.

"China is willing to maintain communication and coordination with relevant parties including the United States to ease tensions on the peninsula", State Councillor Yang Jiechi said, according to the ministry.

Any military solution to the North Korea crisis would be "tragic on an unbelievable scale", Trump's defense secretary, Jim Mattis, said last month. Sputnik reported on June 12 that "North Korea is likely to keep lobbing missiles off the Korean Peninsula, about every two weeks for the rest of the year", referring to a study by the Korea Economic Institute of America.
