Trump, after giving incomprehensible statement on Comey tapes: 'It wasn't very stupid'

While testifying before the House Intelligence Committee, Mr Comey said he hoped there were tapes.

He also said that "the people that've been hired were all Hillary Clinton supporters". Reports in recent days have pointed out that lawyers working on the probe have donated to Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama's campaigns. "With Trump saying maybe somebody else did taping, it makes me wonder are there tapes, did tapes exist at one point that have now been destroyed, are there tapes out there that he's aware of but that he didn't do himself".

Mr Comey testified he was "sure" Mr Mueller was looking at whether Mr Trump had obstructed justice.

Special counsel Robert Mueller is now investigating whether Trump tried to obstruct justice by firing Comey.

Mr Trump, in the Fox News Channel interview, did not say exactly what he thought had changed about Mr Comey's story.

White House spokesman Sean Spicer said at a news briefing that the administration would respond.

Comey was carrying out the investigation into alleged ties between Trump's administration and Russian Federation that led to the triumph of Trump in the 2016 presidential elections. "There has been no collusion".

"James B. Comey better hope that there are no "tapes" of our conversations before he starts leaking to the press!". "But that's been no collusion, no obstruction - and virtually everybody agrees to that". By getting cute, they just opened up Trump to a ton of potential legal trouble as all of his rants on Twitter may soon come back to haunt him.

Trump, who spoke to the network Thursday at the White House, touted the recent Republican victory in a Georgia special election.

When the House passed its horrendous healthcare bill, Trump held a photo-op press event with House members, in the Rose Garden, singing the bill's praises.

What they got on letterhead was the tweet.

"[Mueller] is very, very good friends with Comey, which is very bothersome".

This week, the President revealed he did not have any "tapes" of his conversations with James Comey after weeks of teasing bombshell recordings like he was promoting the season finale of his presidency.

In the same Fox & Friends interview Thursday, Trump hinted at his annoyance regarding Mueller and Comey's close relationship, calling their friendship "very bothersome".

"Well I didn't tape him", the president said.

TRUMP: Well, I didn't tape him. Mr Trump indicated that his comment about tapes may have forced Mr Comey to change his story for fear that he would be contradicted by recordings - though the threat of tapes existing would not have impacted memos written by the former intelligence contemporaneously while he was at the Federal Bureau of Investigation.
