DIRECTV Now to offer Cloud DVR service

DIRECTV Now to offer Cloud DVR service

The telco says it eventually will provide a "consistent look and feel across AT&T consumer video services" throughout the USA, across satellite, mobile and wired internet connections. The company hopes the unification will allow for new and faster features for viewers. "And it will be simple and consistent wherever you watch-TV, phone or tablet", said David Christopher, chief marketing officer, AT&T Entertainment Group.

Additional features on tap for DirecTV Now include parental controls and the ability to pause live TV. It promises to add other features - including multiple user profiles, video downloads for offline viewing, Ultra HD 4K, and HDR - in 2018. Those features are expected next year, the company said. AT&T is aiming to have a consistent design across its mobile video apps, which means DirecTV Now's mobile apps may get a bit of a redesign less than a year after it launched.

The new AT&T platform will add cloud DVR capabilities to DirecTV Now, a feature that was conspicuously absent within the now very competitive market for vMVPD services.

Also, like its rivals in cable, AT&T wants to move as many services as possible away from set top boxes and other hardware and into software housed on internet servers. The public launch of the new DirecTV Now experience will roll out later this year to all subscribers. The service will have packages priced between $15 to $40 per month.

Those plans also compete with other video services, including Hulu's $40 live TV service and YouTube TV's $35 platform, which were both launched earlier this year.
