Google Drive can now back up your entire computer

Google Drive can now back up your entire computer

While Google Drive (and it's competitors such as Dropbox and OneDrive) do a great job of making files available on multiple devices, they aren't true backup tools that retain files indefinitely. In short, Google's Backup and Sync is a one-stop solution for saving files associated with either Google Drive or Google Photos.

"It's a simpler, speedier and more reliable way to protect the files and photos that mean the most to you", says Google.

For several users, this update has been long overdue as it is arguably much more practical to have one client instead of two separate apps uploading files and photos to the exact same cloud destination.

You can find the new service here. The new app is also said to improve the stability and functionality of Google Drive and comes with a brand new and redesigned dashboard. The app's new straightforward name is Backup and Sync, and it will launch on June 28, according to a G Suite blog post. With Google Backup and Sync, users can conveniently select all the folders that they wish to be automatically backed up to the cloud and Google will safely store everything online.

Google is doing all of us a solid and giving everyone the chance to use its free cloud storage to backup an entire computer's system files.

The Google Drive app is now integrated with the Google Photos desktop uploader, so it might have escaped your notice if you're looking for a set-it-and-forget-it standalone backup solution. If your company uses G Suite, you might have a different storage allotment included with your Google account for work.
