Carolina Panthers release GM Gettleman

Panthers unexpectedly fire Ex Giants exec Dave Gettleman

The collective reaction around the National Football League to Monday's announcement from the Carolina Panthers that they have fired General Manager Dave Gentleman can be summed up in a word: Whoa. It's the second major shakeup in Carolina's front office this offseason, as the team fired assistant general manager Brandon Beane in the spring. But Carolina slipped to 6-10 a year ago after a tumultuous offseason that saw Gettleman rescind cornerback Josh Norman's franchise tag after negotiations turned sour.

Only four teams - the New England Patriots, Seattle Seahawks, Denver Broncos and Green Bay Packers - won more playoff games than the Panthers (three victories) did in Dave Gettleman's four seasons. The team parted with 13-year veteran Steve Smith in 2014. Davis, who has returned from multiple knee constructions to be one of the team's on-field leaders on defense, is entering the final year of his contract.

In a statement, team owner Jerry Richardson said, "After much thought and a long evaluation of our football operations, I have chose to relieve Dave Gettleman of his duties as general manager".

Manziel has spoken to teams about National Football League return
Greatly missing the game is one of the driving factors for the former Aggies Heisman Trophy victor . The thing he learned the most during this time, Manziel says, is how much he misses football.

Now another GM has bitten the dust, as the Carolina Panthers announced the release of Dave Gettleman on Monday morning. "While the timing of this decision is not ideal, a change is needed".

Gettleman served as the Giants' pro personnel director from 1999-2011 and was their senior pro personnel analyst in 2012.
