Charlie Gard to be examined by U.S. doctor who created experimental treatment

Despite the debilitating condition his parents Connie Yates and Chris Gard say claims by his doctors that he is irreparably brain damaged are false

Doctors from Great Ormond Street Hospital, where Charlie is hooked up to life support machines, have said the tot will die from the illness.

Charlie was born in August with mitochondrial DNA depletion syndrome, a progressive disease that causes muscle weakness and loss of motor skills, leaving those who have it unable to stand, walk, eat, talk and eventually breathe.

A BRITISH consultant has dismissed a United States doctor's offer to save Charlie Gard with experimental treatment, saying he is hoping for a "magic potion".

Hirano says the therapy he is developing could improve the condition of Charlie who suffers from a form of mitochondrial disease.

Earlier this month New-York Presybterian Hospital/Columbia University Irving Medical Center offered to admit Charlie and to provide him with experimental treatment, according to the Washington Post.

But Britain's courts have refused permission on the grounds it would prolong his suffering without a realistic prospect of it helping the 11-month-old child.

The judge ruled that Charlie's mother Connie, from Bedfont, west London, can be present for the examination.

In a statement, the London hospital said it was "right to try" the experimental treatment prepared for Charlie by "two global hospitals".

His anguished parents, Chris Gard and Connie Yates, are desperate for the trial to go ahead and have raised funds to bring him to the US.

The Great Ormond Street Hospital told the court their position remains unchanged, that every medical treatment option had already been explored, and that any experimental treatment would be unjustified.

But the couple say there is new evidence and want Mr Justice Francis to carry out a fresh analysis of their case.

At the end of June, the European Court of Human Rights rejected an appeal by Charlie's parents that he be allowed to undergo the experimental treatment in the U.S., following a similar ruling by the UK's supreme court.

Connie Yates will join USA neurosurgeon Michio Hirano and other medical experts at Great Ormond Street Hospital, London.

The European Court of Human Rights also decided not to intervene in the case.

But last week, the case returned to the High Court after the hospital asked for a new hearing to consider new evidence from Hirano.

He is due to travel to London on Tuesday to examine Charlie.
